Bunsters is an Australian food company based in Perth, Western Australia. The company produces hot sauce that comes in three different heat levels, the most popular of which is Bunsters Shit the Bed sauce, which has gone viral online.[1][2] The recipe was invented by Renae Bunster who got the inspiration after travelling to Mexico and Central America.[3]

History[edit]

The company was started by Renae Bunster, a former Television Journalist who got the inspiration to make hot sauce after travelling to Mexico, Belize and Costa Rica in 2011. Bunster made her first batch of hot sauce in 2012. After fans urged her to make it as hot as possible she produced ‘Shit the Bed’ in November 2014. Bunster gave it the vulgar name and unscientific heat rating of 12/10 as she didn’t think the sauce would be popular. It went viral on the internet almost immediately. During the Christmas period of 2014, Bunster could not keep up with the demand for Shit the Bed by making it herself and decided to run a crowd funding campaign the next year.[4][5]

Ingredients[edit]

Bunster’s Sauces are made from natural ingredients with no additives or chilli extracts. The ingredients of Shit the Bed include Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and Birds Eye chillies, Orange Juice, Lime Juice, Goji Berries, Garlic, Cilantro (Coriander), Ginger, Onions, Apple Cider Vinegar, Coconut Sugar and Himalayan Pink Salt. [6][7]

Business[edit]

At the end of 2015, Bunster’s Sauces ran a self hosted crowd-funding campaign. The target was $65,000 AUD which was reached in 10 weeks. The company was able to produce a new custom made glass Dom Perignon Champagne inspired bottle. In October 2015 the first large batch of sauce was produced at a factory in Victoria, Australia. In November backers started receiving their sauces. When the campaign finished at Christmas 2016, the total reached was $250,000 AUD.[8][9]
