Burke Syphax

Burke Syphax (December 18, 1910 – July 19, 2010) was a physician who led the Howard University Hospital Department of Surgery for more than a decade during one of its most difficult periods. One of the first people of African American descent to become certified by the American Board of Surgery, he also led the Howard University College of Medicine general surgery division and directed its residency program from 1950 to 1970. In that capacity, he taught thousands of medical students and trained an estimated 90 percent of black surgeons in the Washington, D.C. area. He was the great grandson of Charles Syphax and Maria Carter Syphax. He was the great nephew of William Syphax and John B. Syphax. He died at Howard University Hospital. Dr. Syphax is interred at National Harmony Memorial Park in Prince George’s County Maryland.
