Canelo Álvarez, who had previously won by unanimous decision against Erislandy Lara in July 2014,[4] was seeking a new opponent. After negotiations with several boxers, including Miguel Cotto, fell through, Álvarez decided to face James Kirkland, recognized for his powerful punches.
