Jake Paul vs. Hasim Rahman Jr. is a canceled professional boxing match contested between Jake Paul and Hasim Rahman Jr. The bout was to take place on August 6, 2022 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.[1]

Background[edit]

Originally, Paul was scheduled to fight Tommy Fury on December 18, 2021 however, due to an injury, Fury pulled from the fight and was replaced by former UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley instead.[2]

On June 10, 2022, Paul took to Twitter to announce that he and Amanda Serrano will be co-headlining at Madison Square Garden on August 6.[3]

On June 22, 2022, Paul and Fury went back and forth on Twitter with Paul claiming that Fury was pulling out of the fight once more due to his family members not being able to attend. On June 23, 2022 however, Fury responded to Paul stating "The fight is on. August 6th. Forget a team or any other bullshit. I don’t need anybody to help me lay you flat on that canvas."[4] That same day, it was announced that the two will be facing each other in a professional bout. That same day it was announced that Serrano will be facing Brenda Carabajal.[5]

Prior to the scheduled press conference on June 29, Fury was denied access to the U.S. due to issues with his visa.[6] This sparked the cancelation of the press conference. Paul took it to Twitter multiple times requesting Fury to "Go to the embassy and get your visa."[7] This sparked KSI to go after Paul on Twitter stating, "Jake Paul vs. Tyrone Woodley 3. Can't wait man" jokingly reminding Paul that Woodley had to replace Fury in December after offering Paul and Fury a spot on his upcoming event as a co-main fight.[8][9] Paul declined the offer. After no response from Fury and Paul constantly giving Fury steps on how to resolve his issue, it was announced on July 6 that Fury was no longer Paul's opponent. This marks the second time Fury has pulled out from a bout with Paul and a replacement was to be announced the next day.[10] On July 7th it was announced that Hasim Rahman Jr would be the replacement to fight Paul on August 6th.

On July 26, 2022, the fight's pay-per-view (PPV) price, $60, was criticised by fans and the media alike, with the fight being labelled as a "rip off".[11] Paul's long-term rival KSI also commented on the price of the PPV, writing mockingly on Twitter: "60 PPV? I PROMISE you all that my PPV this August 27th will be less than that", referencing his upcoming boxing bout with Alex Wassabi on August 27.[12]

Cancellation[edit]

On July 30th, it was announced that the bout would be cancelled due to "weight-issues" and that all sales towards the fight would be refunded.[13] According to Paul, Rahman Jr was to submit weight checks to the New York State Athletic Commission to ensure that he was to make fighting weight in a healthy manner. When Rahman reportedly had only lost a pound within three weeks of training, the Athletic Commission stated that the fight must take place at 205lb, otherwise they would not sanction the bout. Rahman, Paul, and Paul's promotional company Most Valuable Promotions all initially agreed to this. However, a subsequent weight-check revealed that Rahman and his boxing managers would only agree to fight at 215lbs and would pull out if it were to be any lower. Paul and Most Valuable Promotions refused and the bout was cancelled.[14][15] Rahman later responded to Paul's allegations stating that Paul's team only wanted to "drain [him] down" in size and weight, and the reason for missing the weight prerequisite was that his body "could not physically" go lower in the given amount of time.[16]
