Central Standard (CS) is a 50-member men's barbershop chorus, based in Kansas City, Missouri.[1] The chorus has medaled four times at the BHS International Convention, ranging from fourth to second place in the contest.[2][3] Under the direction of Rob Mance, the chorus has been noted for its clean and resonant singing[4]. Central Standard was the guest performance at the BABS convention in Harrogate, England in 2018[5]
History
In 2007, a small group of men from Kansas City began the process of forming a new chorus within the Barbershop Harmony Society. Their aim was to strive for a characteristically wonderful sound while also maintaining a culture that values camaraderie.[6] Over the next 8 years, the chorus grew in both size and ability, as they steadily improved their score/standing in the Barbershop Harmony Society International Chorus Competition,[7][8][9][10][11][12] as well as a few first place finishes at the Central States District contest[13] and being invited to perform for the American Choral Director's Association.[14] The chorus was originally directed by Mike Neff. [15] In 2009 the chorus was one of the smallest groups to ever qualify for the BHS International Contest.[16] In 2011 Rob Mance took over as the director[17][18] and has led the group to eight BHS International Contest appearances[19] and helped them rank among the top scoring choruses in the Barbershop Harmony Society.[20]
Competition
Central Standard earned their first medal (a 3rd Place bronze medal) at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s 2015 International Convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[21] This marked the beginning of a streak of International Placements for every year that the chorus competed in the International Chorus competition (2nd place Silver – Nashville 2016[22], 3rd place Bronze – Las Vegas 2017[23], and 4th place Bronze – Salt Lake City 2019)[24]. Most recently, in fall of 2019, Central Standard qualified for the 2020 International Convention.[25] Since the 2020 and 2021 conventions were cancelled due to public health concerns related to singing during the global COVID-19 Pandemic[26][27], the invitation extended to Central Standard in fall of 2019 continues to qualify Central Standard for the next international convention that occurs.
- Central Standard elected to sit out the 2017-2018 international contest cycle as they had been invited to headline the 2018 British Association of Barbershop Singing National Convention in Harrogate, England.[28]
Choral Directors Association
Along with their success in the Barbershop Harmony Society, Central Standard has had the honor of being selected as a performing group at all three levels of the various Choral Directors Association Conventions; the 2016 Iowa Choral Directors Association Convention[29], the 2018 Southwest American Choral Directors Association Convention[30], and the 2019 American Choral Directors Association Convention.[31]
