Chad Johnson (born April 14, 1989), also known as his online alias OMGchad, is an American YouTube, Twitch, and podcast personality. Johnson has two YouTube channels "OMGchad", a personal gaming channel, and "OMGcraft", a Minecraft tutorial channel.[1]

Early life[edit]

Chad Ryan Johnson was born on April 14, 1989, in Austin, Texas.[2] He has an older sister and a younger sister.[2][3] At an early age, Johnson was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD. He attended a private middle school for dyslexic students, but later moved back to public schooling. He graduated from Austin High School.[4] During high school, he had an increased interest in online video. He discovered the YouTube community through a school project that involved him creating an unofficial music video for Lemon Demon, a band by internet superstar Neil Cicierega.[2] He became interested in vlogging and uploaded his first vlog to his YouTube channel titled "chadrjohnson".[5] On 29 January 2008, Chad announced he would be suspending his "chadrjohnson" channel and moving to a channel titled "Krazzydude07".[6][7] Less than two years later, in September 2009, Chad announced he would be continuing his vlogs on a new YouTube channel, his current one, titled "OMGchad".[8]

Career[edit]

Prior to Johnson's Internet career, he was a stage manager for magician Brian Brushwood. With Brian, Johnson traveled internationally selling various merchandise.[9] In addition, Chad served as a creative consultant on Discovery Digital Networks' online series Scam School.[10] In 2011, Johnson was hired by TWiT.tv, an online podcasting company, and received the title of "Associate Producer". He moved from Austin, Texas to Petaluma, California.[2][8] Shortly after joining TWiT, he produced a video game podcast titled "Game On!", featuring Brian Brushwood, his former employer, and Internet celebrity Veronica Belmont. The show was cancelled after 13 episodes.[11] Later at TWiT, he served as Leo Laporte's producer and produced the top shows for the network.[12][13][14] During his time at the network, he started hosting shows such as "This Week in YouTube",[15] "redditUp", and most notably, "The Giz Wiz", starring MAD Magazine's Dick DeBartolo.[12] Occasionally, he would make appearances on Premiere Networks' "The Tech Guy", and other various shows.[16][17][18] Under his management, TWiT won various awards, including the 2012 Stitcher Awards for "Best Tech Podcast".[19] In October 2014, he announced via a Tumblr post that he was no longer employed at TWiT.tv and would be pursuing his YouTube channels full-time.[20][21] Though no longer at TWiT, he continued to host "The Giz Wiz" and produce it on his own.[22] Since it's independence, the show has been promoted on ABC's World News Now.[23]

On 2 October 2014, Chad joined Mindcrack, a group of independent content creators.[24] On 31 October 2014, shortly after he left TWiT, he announced it via a YouTube video and elaborate online prank.[25] In March 2015, Chad announced he was moving to Los Angeles, California.[26] He has also freelanced for companies, including Zagat, to host their online videos.[27]
