Charlie Gray (born 1976) is an international fashion and portrait photographer based in London.[1] [2]
Early life and Education[edit]
Gray was born in Cambridge, United Kingdom. At the age of 14 he started working weekends in his father’s record store Andy’s Records, it is here he developed a love of icons through album and video artwork. Gray lived with his single parent mother, a vintage fashion dealer, whose profession he also attributes as having had a major influence on his career.
He attended school at Impington Village College and went on to study A-Levels at Long Road Sixth Form College, from there studied photography at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, where he was tutored by photographic book designer Stuart Smith and John Warwicker of Tomato.
Photography Career[edit]
Gray began photographing whilst at university, becoming involved in various documentary projects. He acknowledges these formative years as a true learning curve in terms of technical and people skills which later became invaluable to his photographic career. This was also a time of digesting photography books, specifically the work of Don McCullin, Martin Parr and Gray references In Our Time: The World As Seen by Magnum Photographers as a major influence.[3]
Gray’s work for industry giants such as Apple, BAFTA[4], Disney [5], EON Productions, Netflix [6], Paramount Pictures, Esquire [7], GQ [8], ICON [9], Vogue and Vanity Fair [10] focuses on fashion and portraiture with actors and musicians.[11]
Gray has been a brand Ambassador for Leica Camera since 2016.[12]
