CheckUp & Choices (C&C)  is a digital health company that helps individuals and organizations reduce alcohol and substance misuse problems. C&C was co-founded in 2015 in Albuquerque, New Mexico by Reid K. Hester, Ph.D. and Caton Burwell MBA, M.Ed.

CheckUp & Choices’ digital programs are based on motivational and cognitive behavioral interventions that have been validated in eight NIH-funded randomized clinical trials.[1][1][2][3][4][5][6]

History[edit]

Dr. Reid K. Hester, Ph.D. and Caton Burwell co-founded CheckUp & Choices in 2015.[citation needed]

Reid K. Hester, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and clinical researcher who has published over 60 journal articles on the topic of substance misuse. He received his masters and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Washington State University in 1979.[7]

Prior to co-founding C&C, Caton Burwell was the manager of QED Investors, a venture capital firm focused on early stage companies that leverage the power of data and technology. Mr. Burwell received his BA from Harvard College and his MBA and M.Ed. from Stanford University.[8][9]

Research[edit]

CheckUp & Choices is based on motivational and cognitive behavioral interventions that have been validated in eight randomized clinical trials funded by more than $5.6 million in competitive grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

In these clinical trials focusing on alcohol misuse, individuals who used elements of the CheckUp & Choices program experienced a 55% drop in drinking quantity, frequency, and intensity for less dependent drinkers, a 50% reduction in alcohol-related problems for all drinkers, and a 36% decrease in drinking days in dependent drinkers.

In consultation with leading experts in their respective research fields, modules for other substances have been developed for Marijuana, Opioids, and Stimulants.
