Choking On Air is an American metalcore band from Santa Fe, New Mexico formed in 2010 by George Helfrich (vocals, guitar), Tavi Zeir (keys, synth) and John Helfrich (drums).[1] After various new members joining and then leaving, the band eventually formed their current lineup, adding Terren Newman (lead vocals) and Bridie Alexander-Lawrie (bass, vocals).[2] The band has since released one studio album, S.I.N.S.(2014), as well as a single entitled "Plastic Smiles" from an upcoming album.

History

Formation and S.I.N.S.(2010–2014)

The band was originally founded by brothers George Helfrich and John Helfrich, and were soon joined by Tavi Zeir. They began playing shows in Santa Fe as a Pop Punk band with various stand-in bassists, and eventually added a second guitarist, Terren Newman in 2012.[1] This was soon followed by the release of their first single, "The Second One" and the addition of bassist Bridie Alexander-Lawrie as a permanent addition to the lineup, whom George Helfrich knew from a band that they both were in before.[1] With two more members and thus two more musical influences, the band began dramatically changing their sound to metalcore by releasing a demo that was unmistakably heavier than their previous material. Choking On Air, now with a finalized lineup and a new sound, then began recording an EP with Ceremony Studios, and then on July 17, 2014, they released "Scars I've Never Shown" with Terren Newman now doing lead vocals, and the song was nominated for The New Mexico Music Awards for best metal song.[3] After then touring around northern New Mexico for a short period of time, they officially released S.I.N.S. on October 9, 2014.[4]

Schizofriendship (2015–present)

After a brief period of playing shows around New Mexico following the release of their EP, and several press releases on them,[2][5][6][7] Choking On Air announced that they were working on a second studio album.[8] The band proceeded to put out studio updates periodically on their YouTube page, revealing that they were recording at Frogville Records, and soon announced the title of the album to be Schizofriendship. Choking On Air was then voted best metal band for the Santa Fe Reporter's Best of Santa Fe,[9] and following the hype, continued to produce studio updates and play shows around their home state. Then, on April 13, they released their single, "Plastic Smiles" as well as aired on 101.1 FM KSFR for a radio interview where they also played an acoustic version of "Scars I've Never Shown".[1] The band has stated that Schizofriendship will be released in July.

Musical Style

Instrumental Style

Choking On Air has been described as Metalcore, however they have said that they "like playing a variety of music and... exploring new musical ideas"[1] and the group self describes as Progressive metalcore.[10] Furthermore, since the band initially began as Pop Punk, changed their sound to Metalcore, and additionally stated that they will be exploring a new sound again on their full-length album,[1] Choking on Air is typically described as having a diverse style.

Lyrical Style

Choking On Air's lyricism is often referred to as emotionally charged,[9] and is described to touch on a wide range of political issues.[2] They have said that their writing is done as a whole, and since virtually all members of the band do vocals, everyone influences the lyrics in some way.[1]
