Chukwuka Ekweani, known professionally as CKay, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and producer signed to Chocolate City.[1][2] Named one of the Nigeria's "Top10 rising stars making waves in 2020"[3], CKay is a multi-talented musician specializing in a number of genres including Afrobeats, R'n'B and dancehall.[4]
Career
Growing up in Kaduna, Northern Nigeria, his earliest contact with music was through his father, who at that time, was a choir conductor in church.[5] Before he was 10, his father schooled him in music theory and taught him how to play the piano. He began producing and writing music at age 13 and was part of a three-man musical group known as Creative Music.[6]
In 2014, he relocated to Lagos and got the opportunity to work with Chocolate City Music as a production intern in early 2015.[7] While there, he impressed so much that he was signed to Loopy Music. This would then lead to an official signing in 2016 as an artist with Chocolate City Music, when M.I.'s appointment as CEO led to a merger between the labels.[8]
He released his debut EP in 2017 titled, Who The F*ck is CKay, leveraging on a controversial Loose Talk podcast episode in which then Pulse editor, Osagie Alonge uttered the words, "Who the fuck is CKay?".[9]
CKay released CKay The First on August 30, 2019; an 8-track project described by popular Nigerian blog, Culture Custodian as being full of ‘twist and sways’, sporting songs ‘vibrant and bursting in style’. The album features a number of musical genres and influences, including Afrobeats. RnB, highlife and dancehall. It also sports a number of features including Boj, Dj Lambo, Barry Jhay, and label mate, Blaqbonez. The EP is accompanied by a CKay-directed short film titled, Alien, which was released on June 5, 2020 and is sound tracked by music from the EP.[10]
His track "Love Nwantiti" gained fame with a remix version featuring Joeboy & Kuami Eugene. A North African remix featuring ElGrandeToto became popular in the Maghreb countries.
