Commodity Discovery Fund is a Dutch investment fund based in Aerdenhout near Haarlem in The Netherlands. The fund specializes in investments in exploration companies involved with the most significant mineral or metals discoveries in stable countries across the planet. The aim of the Fund is to achieve the highest returns (in Euros) at an acceptable level of risk. The Fund primarily invests in companies listed on the TSX Venture Exchange which are focused on the exploration and discovery of commodities. The investment portfolio comprises investments in a broad selection of companies that are active in different phases of discoveries.[1]
The Commodity Discovery Fund was founded in 2008 by the Dutch journalist, book author and entrepreneur Willem Middelkoop, who got fascinated by the "art of discovery investing" as a private investor in gold and silver stocks since 2002.[2] He first launched a paid newsletter on the subject and then on the 1st of July 2008 launched the fund. Despite the fact that a long commodity bear market set in, the fund grew steadily. As of 2022 it has over 2000 participants, mostly Dutch and Flemish, bringing in over 120 million capital that is invested in more than 100 mining companies. In those first 14 years over 70 of the junior mining companies that the fund had invested in, ended in take-outs by large mining companies.[3] Due to this succes Middelkoop has earned a reputation as a "pioneer in discovery investing"[4]
“Commodity Discovery Fund is an excellent vehicle for people to really get in at the ground level on exciting finds. They are finding people that want to invest in a new wave or a new style of mineralisation.” Ed Mead, Artemis Resources[5]
The fund invests mostly in discovery projects around monetary metals (gold, silver, platinum) and industrial or battery metals (copper, nickel, zinc, lithium), the latter being a key driver of the energy transition towards renewables. In order to safeguard ethical standards the fund invests exclusively in Listed Companies, listed mostly on Canadian, Australian and American stock markets. The Fund is allowed to use derivatives (only listed), for hedging purposes as well as to realize the investment objective.[6]
Legal[edit]
From a legal point of view, the fund is a Fund for Joint Account (FGR),[7] which was incorporated in The Netherlands in 2008 under the UCITS regime. The fund is supervised by Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and De Nederlandsche Bank.
