Cyberian hip hop is a hip hop music subgenre that encompasses any artists who's authentic creative backgrounds originate from an online or virtual community (like a forum, imageboard, chat room, blog, gaming, MMOW, social networking service, file hosting service, image hosting service and video hosting service community) formed within the 'global village' of electronic communication; also called cyberspace. The word “cyberian” simply describes a person who is highly interested in computers and the internet. An enthusiast.[1]
Nerdcore hip hop (also known as nerd rap, otaku rap, hacker rap or gamer rap) is the oldest cyberian hip hop subgenre, originating in the early 2000s. Since 2010, the genre has gained notable mainstream success, with artists such as Jace Hall, Dan Bull, Josip On Deck, Dunkey, Sky Williams, MC Frontalot and YTCracker garnering the most media attention.
History[edit]
The Early Years (2000-2005)[edit]
The earliest known recorded use of the term "nerdcore hip hop" was in 2000 by MC Frontalot, after he released the song "Nerdcore Hiphop", bringing Nerdcore hip hop into existence. His song became an immediate hit in various online communities, making nerdcore hip hop the first Nerdcore hip hop subgenre. In 2002, the popular webcomic Penny Arcade recognized MC Frontalot's music, naming him their “Official MC of Penny Arcade” aswell as directing their growing fanbase to his website.[2] Further popularizing MC Frontalot and the nerdcore hip hop genre. In appreciation, MC Frontalot created the Penny Arcade Theme song a few months later, which is now known for appearing in the dance video game In the Groove. In 2004, the popular web comic Penny Arcade held its first convention, called the Penny Arcade Expo, in Bellevue, Washington. Though the expo was primarily devoted to video and table top gaming, various nerdcore hip hop acts also performed including MC Frontalot and Optimus Rhyme.
