DISA (Dansk Industri Syndikat A/S), a division of the Norican Group, is a globally recognized leader in foundry technology. Being around for over a century, DISA has established itself as a trusted partner for foundries worldwide, delivering cutting-edge innovations and comprehensive support throughout the casting process.

DISA Group develops and manufactures a complete range of metal casting production solutions for the green sand foundry industry. Headquartered in Taastrup, Denmark, DISA has the industry’s broadest molding product portfolio, comprising vertical (DISAMATIC®), matchplate (DISA MATCH) and horizontal (DISA FLEX) green sand molding systems.

History[edit]

DISA has a long manufacturing history. Founded in 1900 as Compagnie Madsen A/S to produce V.H.O Madsen’s light machine gun, it then manufactured a wide range of products, from sewing machines and refrigerators to motorcycles and petrol pumps.

Since 1961, DISA has emerged as a leading expert in green sand foundry equipment. Notably, DISA revolutionized the industry by introducing the groundbreaking DISAMATIC vertical molding line in 1962, which became commercially available in 1964.

DISA’s commitment to growth and innovation has been evident through strategic acquisitions. In 1986, it acquired BMD, a prominent foundry equipment manufacturer, and in 2000, DISA expanded its portfolio by acquiring V&S shot blasting. In the same year, DISA Group solidified its position in the market by acquiring Georg Fischer’s foundry equipment division.

Witnessing a significant milestone in its journey, DISA Group merged with Wheelabrator Group in September 2008, giving rise to the formidable Norican Group. This alliance further strengthened DISA’s market presence and expertise in foundry equipment. With Norican Group acquiring ItalPresseGauss and StrikoWestofen in May 2017, these acquisitions bolstered Norican Group’s capabilities in aluminum die casting technology, positioning the company as a global leader in the foundry equipment and casting industry.

Mission & Vision[edit]

DISA’s core mission is to revolutionize the foundry industry by providing state-of-the-art equipment, software, and services that enable green sand foundries to achieve higher productivity, superior quality, and sustainable operations. Combining deep industry expertise with advanced technologies, DISA helps to deliver integrated solutions that optimize efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance foundry performance.

Headquarters[edit]

DISA’s headquarters and main manufacturing center is in Taastrup, Denmark. It is half the size of its previous facility in Herlev, consumes 60% less energy and incorporates solar panels. [1]

Products[edit]

DISA manufactures and maintains all the main equipment required for a modern green sand foundry. Molding systems [2] form the majority of its production.[3]

Molding[edit]

Molding is a flexible, fast and low-cost way to produce molds for high-quality ferrous and non-ferrous castings.

Vertical molding[edit]

Vertical molding is a very efficient way to quickly and automatically create a string of flaskless high-precision sand molds that are vertically parted and poured.[4] The fastest current DISAMATIC machine [5] produces up to 555 uncored or 485 cored molds per hour. DISAMATICs can produce mould sizes from 480x600mm up to 1050x1200mm.

Matchplate molding[edit]

The DISA MATCH [6] matchplate molding machine employs a plate with patterns mounted on both sides.[7] This offers greater speed and mold accuracy compared to older horizontal techniques like jolt squeeze.

Horizontal molding[edit]

Horizontal flask molding is the traditional way to automate mold production. It is especially suited to large and heavy parts. DISA manufactures two horizontal types: the turn-style DISA FLEX [8] and the jolt-squeeze DISA ARPA.[9]

Digital products[edit]

DISA supplies digital products [10] including the Monitizer [11] process monitoring and predictive analytics tools. It partners Artificial Intelligence vendor DataProphet [12]for casting quality optimization tools.

Other products[edit]

Other equipment includes conveyor systems which transport new molds from the molding machine to be filled with molten metal, and then to cooling [13] and “shake-out” where castings are separated from the molds. DISA produces sand mixing and cooling equipment and numerous other foundry accessories such as core technologies. [14]

Global Centers[edit]

DISA’s US center has been based in LaGrange, Texas since 1988. In 2022, DISA and the other Norican Group brands moved all manufacturing and operations to the new LaGrange Technology hub. Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag

DISA has a longstanding manufacturing presence in India and China and a technology transfer policy that makes modern foundry equipment designs available for local production. [15]

India Incorporated in 1984, DISA India Limited is 74.82% owned by DISA Holding A/S and part of the Norican Group. The remaining shares are publicly owned and listed at the Bombay Stock Exchange. DISA India also owns Bhadra Castalloy, an alloy steel foundry in Bhadravati that is part of the Castalloy Group, another Norican subsidiary. The Tumkur facility [16] in Karnataka State, South India opened in 1984 and is DISA India’s headquarters. It employs 160 people and has produced the DISAMATIC C3 since 2011. DISA India has a further manufacturing facility in Hosakote and an R&D Centre in Bangalore.

China DISA’s Changzhou [17] manufacturing center commenced operation in 1997. A new, larger Norican Group factory opened in Hanjiang in 2020.[18]

Target Customers[edit]

DISA Group serves a diverse range of customers in the foundry and surface preparation industries. DISA’s target audience includes foundries, metalcasters, and companies of all sizes, ranging from small-scale operations to large industrial foundries involved in metal processing, surface preparation, and related sectors. Their target audience are brands typically looking for advanced technologies and solutions to enhance their casting processes, improve productivity, reduce costs, and achieve higher-quality output.

Media Coverage[edit]

Overtime, DISA has been able to help numerous companies like Shanxi Huaxiang Group Co., Ltd. reduce scrap by close to 60% through the implementation of DISA’s Monitizer® digital suite in their foundry operations. Also, Chinese foundry Guangzhou Deshan CNC Technology Co. Ltd. achieved significant success with the DISAMATIC C3-350 machine, a green sand, vertical molding line, producing over 10 million molds in less than 5 years, with high quality, low maintenance, and an average daily output of over 7,000 molds.[19] [20] [21]
