Dali Van Gogh are a hard rock band from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. With a sound that has been described as "a love letter to hard rock".[1], the band was founded in 2009 by guitarist Isaac Kent. Dali Van Gogh have released a demo album, Verbal Warning, an EP, Mask Identity (2012)[2], and three full-length albums: Wild Blue City (2012)[3], From Ashes (2017)[4], and most recently Under Her Spell (2019)[5].
History[edit]
2009–2014: Formation, Wild Blue City, and hiatus[edit]
Dali Van Gogh was founded in 2009 as a four piece and recorded a 10 song demo album entitled Verbal Warning in 2010. In late 2011, Dali Van Gogh began to re-record tracks featured on said demo and write new material for what would become the Mask Identity EP and Wild Blue City. Mask Identity was released in early 2012, featuring radio singles "Not My Worst" and "Sober". In late 2012, Wild Blue City was released [6], with the title track being ranked #16 on Q104's Top Nova Scotian Songs of 2012[7]. A tour across Eastern Canada and the United States was planned, but cancelled when then-vocalist Marcel McNeil departed from the band. After initial attempts to find a replacement failed, the band went on hiatus[8].
2015-2018, Return from hiatus and From Ashes[edit]
In early 2015, founding member Isaac Kent's home burned down, inspiring what would become their second studio album From Ashes. Recruiting a new line-up of musicians, with the exception of Kent, Dali Van Gogh released the single "God Help Me (I Like It)" in October of 2016, leading to the release of From Ashes. Their second single, "Black Scales", generated minor controversy for its political undertones[9]. The band embarked on a cross-country tour that summer in support of the album, with a second summer tour the following year to support the third and final single, "Outside Looking In". The success of the single afforded them the opportunity to open for The Glorious Sons at the Garrison Brewery Back-Lot Bash[10].
Present, Under Her Spell[edit]
After the departure of drummer Jaad Stewart and keyboardist Devon Roberts, Johnny Moore and Rachelle Moreau joined the band. Under Her Spell[11] was released in March 2019, preceded by a pair of singles "Get Away"[12] and "Superman & MacGyver". After the album's launch, two more singles were released, "East Coast Witches"[13] and "Have It All"[14]
