Damnation Angels is a British symphonic metal band formed in 2006, which also incorporates elements of power and progressive metal.

History

Early Years (2006-2010)

Damnation Angels formed in late 2006 by Will and John Graney, brothers.

Over the next three years, they began to work on their first EP and brought in other talent. The Graney brothers were joined by Gabriel Scott, Lewis Starfire, and Dawn Trigg during this time. The EP, "Shadow Symphony", was released on September 5, 2009.[1]

Bringer of Light and The Valiant Fire (2010–2015)

As Damnation Angels moved on from the Shadow Symphony EP, there were a few lineup changes. Notably, this included bringing in PelleK to perform lead vocals, and the departure of Lewis Starfire and Gabriel Scott.

The "Shadow Symphony" EP laid the groundwork for the band's first album, "Bringer of Light". The album includes a quartet of songs labeled 'Shadow Symphony" Parts I-IV, indicating that the EP was recycled and expanded upon for the full album. "Bringer of Light" was released on March 7, 2012 in Japan. It was released worldwide in February 2013, and Damnation Angels signed a multi-album deal with Massacre Records for the release.[2]

During an interview with MetalInsider.net, PelleK revealed that Will Graney, the band's lead guitarist, had begun working on music for the band's second album before "Bringer of Light" was released, emphasizing that "the stuff you’re going to be hearing on the next Damnation Angels album he’s been working on non-stop for several years."[3]

As the band moved toward recording their second album, they lost Dawn Trigg in 2013 and Stephen Averill in 2014[4], leaving just three permanent members of the band. Regardless, "The Valiant Fire" was released on March 27, 2015 in Europe to critical acclaim.[5] A North American release followed on June 23, 2015.

The departure of PelleK and Fiber of Our Being (2015–2020)

While 'The Valiant Fire' was still being released, the band issued a statement on their Facebook page to announce the departure of PelleK.[6] The split was amicable, with PelleK's own statement corroborating that he simply could not continue to dedicate enough time to the band.[7]

The band pressed forward in search of a new vocalist, and announced through Facebook on January 26, 2016 that they had picked up Ignacio Rodriguez to be the new vocalist.[8] In an interview with Metal-Heads.de, Will Graney revealed that Rodriguez stood out from the first note he sang in his audition, and that their primary concern was finding a vocalist "with the range to be able to sing our past/future songs."[9]

The band's third album, "Fiber Of Our Being", was announced January 3, 2020 via Facebook, with a 2020 Q1 release window and the first look at the album artwork.[10] This window was later pushed back due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus Pandemic. A final release date of July 31, 2020 was announced on May 29, 2020, alongside the release of the album's first single, "Fiber of Our Being". The band's first music video, for the song "A Sum of Our Parts", followed on July 5, 2020.[11]

"Fiber of Our Being" was released on July 31, 2020. Coverage of the release has been light due to self-publication, but the album has still received favorable reviews from TheProgMind,[12] RockMagazine.net,[13] WimpsAndPosers,[14] and others.

Musical style

Damnation Angels' musical style aims to "create a new benchmark in Symphonic Metal.[15] The band utilizes orchestral composition alongside standard metal instruments. They also draw in elements from power metal and progressive metal as a signature part of their sound.

In an interview with Metal Meltdown in 2013, after the release of "Bringer of Light", PelleK stated "I think that's a big thing that makes us really unique is Will's ability to orchestrate the way he does. It's really man vs. equipment then. Listen to how other people can make orchestrating sound compared to Will." Will Graney followed by saying, "When we write songs, there's nothing in there for the sake of it. We don't force anything, we don't put orchestra in for the sake of it. There's no ego...We put everything in, we put as much work on each instrument. We concentrate just as much on the riffing as we do on the orchestra."[16]
