Early life and education
David Boyd Janes was born June 4, 1984, to father Boyd Janes and mother Janet Janes at Saint Joseph’s hospital in Toronto, Ontario.[1]. David comes from a large family from the east coast, all across Newfoundland, but found himself as an only child. Growing up surrounded by several aunts and uncles, as David’s mom was one of 13 children and his father one of three. When David was only 18 months old, his parents took him to audition for a TV show in Toronto that was suggested by a family friend. A sitcom was searching for a baby to join the cast, and David was offered the gig based on his natural ability to follow the cameras and follow direction. After David’s mother found out the restrictions David would have to follow, she declined as she wanted her son to grow up like a normal child. Funny enough, 17 years later, David decides he wants to form a rock band and does exactly that. After being accepted into Etobicoke School of The Arts, David quickly formed Canadian Rock Band “Running Against Radar”[2] and took it to some high levels of success at the young age of 19. David and his band won the Canadian Title for world-renowned music festival “Emergenza”[3] in 2004 and was flown to Rothenburg, Germany to play in the Black Forest for the world finals. *Since 2000 the big international Emergenza-Final takes place during the Taubertal Open Air in the medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. David and his band placed 7th overall in the world finals, but this would be the last trip for this young up and coming rock band as David soon decided to quit the band after having a falling out while on tour.
Career
David then took a 14 year hiatus from music and treated it more like a hobby and pastime than trying to make a career out of it. During this time, he would just take part in local Karaoke nights trying to fulfil his passion for music, but deep down inside he knew he wanted to be back up on that stage one day. At the age of 21, David was offered the opportunity to work for Heating and cooling company One Hour Heating in Toronto, ON, as a sales person. This was the start of David hanging up the microphone for good, or was it? David had a lot of success as he found a new passion working in sales, but would still take the odd night out to sing in local pubs and bars for their karaoke nights. As the years went on, one of David’s friends began hosting an open mic night and David was invited to join. This is where his passion for music really started to take form once again.
Once a month these open mics would be hosted at a local pub and inspired musicians would share the stage to showcase their music. David was one of these people just trying to find himself back in front of the microphone. To fast forward to April 2017, David had just come out of a 3 year relationship with someone that wasn't supportive of him chasing his dreams in music and this is where everything would come to a boiling point. David, now just days after the breakup, found himself sitting at home re thinking the last 14 years of his life and felt like something had been missing this whole time. While surfing the internet at home, he came across a singing competition called “The Shot”[4] and season five auditions were quickly approaching, so David decided to take his shot. David made it all the way to the top 10 in Canada and this is where his passion and desire to make music a full time career really took off! David didn't win the contest, but he didn't need to. David said during the show “it’s not about winning, it’s about growing and learning as an artist.” David headed home “Empty handed” of any trophies, but his heart was full of fuel to hit the ground running and take one final swing at the plate of making music his full time career.
In 2018, David hit the ground running by heading down to Nashville to record his new found songs on an EP called "Thoughts Become Things" that essentially launched his career and gave DBJ his place in the country music scene in Canada. David’s first 4 singles "Summertime Feeling" / "I Ain't Sticking Around" / "Whiskey Won't" & "On Tonight all graced the top 100 on the Canadian Billboard and was the sign David needed to know he was on the right track.
2019 put DBJ in the spotlight after he won several awards including; Artist of the Year at the Mississauga Music Awards, The Next Country Music Star Havelock Jamboree Emerging Artist Award, The Country Wild Emerging Artist Award in Cobourg, Ontario, and was the Boots & Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase Winner.
2020, DBJ landed himself a sync licence with Canadian BBQ food chain Montana's for the use of a song he co-wrote in Nashville with hit song writer Jason Mathews called "Ready For A Good Time" and the song became the music of all Montana's TV and radio ads across Canada. 2020 was also the year the world was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that didn't stop David. David continued writing and working on his plans to make his mark in country music and he continued to do exactly that.
2020 saw DBJ release "Couldn’t Hurt" with (Warner Music Canada), and became his first to debut on the Canadian Billboard Country charts in the Top 50 (entering at #47 and made the Canadian Top 40 in its first 3 weeks of being on the Canadian Billboard).
DBJ has reached and surpassed 4 million digital streams worldwide, with new listeners coming in as more new music is released.
DBJ was also named Pure Country’s Future Star for March and April 2021, thanks to the strength of Couldn’t Hurt.
2021, Country Music Association of Ontario Male Artist of the Year nominee, David Boyd Janes, has been on a helluva ride over the last couple of years. And if you asked him about it, he’d probably start by telling you that Thoughts Become Things.
On top of that, like a cherry on top of a sundae, David Boyd Janes joins fellow nominees Tim Hicks, Andrew Hyatt, Aaron Allen and Darcy John for Male Artist of the Year in the 2021 CMAOntario Awards taking place in Hamilton, ON, in the fall of 2021.
It’s a logical next step after his 2020 Rising Star award nomination and shows progress in his career, with his industry peers and country music fans. Artists are well-known for saying that being nominated is an honour when it comes to awards; and while winning is always the best part for anyone, we hope that David Boyd Janes sees that he’s being noticed by folks on both sides of the scene as one of the next spotlight stars in Ontario’s country music community.
An album is in the works and expected to be out early summer this year, 2021!
