David Record (born October 17, 1984), is a Canadian rapper, songwriter, author and executive producer of Jamaican descent.[1][2] In 2019 he won Music Canada’s Gold Platinum Awards.[3] According to Brampton Guardian, Record is the first Canadian urban artist to receive a gold certification without being directly signed to a major label at the time of the release.[4]

In 2014 he received the Arts Acclaim Citizen Award.[5]

During his musical career, Record has released three albums, eleven singles, two documentary films and a published book of poetry.

His songs were on rotation of local radio stations CKLN Ryerson University Radio, CHRY, York University Radio and WBLK.

Biography[edit]

Early life[edit]

David Record was born on October 17, 1984 in Ottawa, Canada and was raised in Brampton, Canada. He grew up listening to rap and hip hop, as well as reggie and dancehall that was part of his Jamaican roots. From a young age, he absorbed these influences and started to develop his musical skills. Record attended the Metalworks Institute in the field of entertainment of business management with the goal of starting his own record company.

Career[edit]

2009: Rise Again, Step Into Destiny[edit]

His musical career began in 2009, when many of the early songs were picked up by local radio stations CKLN Ryerson University Radio, CHRY, York University Radio and WBLK, and soon made it onto regular rotation. He gradually gained popularity in the Greater Toronto Area, participating in professional rap battles.

In the following year, Record begins to collaborate with а Canadian singer Liberty Silver, who is the recipient of multiple Juno and Grammy awards. In collaboration with her, Record released his debut album, Rise Again, two years later. Featuring multiple hit songs such as “You Are Everything” and “I Got Time”, Rise Again garnered plenty of media attention from outlets including The Brampton Guardian, Mississauga News, Snap Newspaper, and Sway Magazine.

“I Got Time” was on steady rotation on the radio in 2010, and as a marker of his rising popularity, David was cast in a commercial for the MTV Video Music Awards alongside fellow Canadian superstar Drake.

In the same year Record had a chance to perform at Caribana for the Irie Music Festival 2010 to an audience of 16,000 people.[6]

David wrote the theme tune for The Herbert H. Carnegie Future Aces Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization started by Herb Carnegie.[7]

In order to create his own record company, David decides to study entertainment business management at the Metalworks Institute. After some time, he founded Rise Again Entertainment Inc. and took on the role of executive producer, to facilate music publishing, touring and merchandising.[8] His following single, “Submit to Me”, was entirely recorded, mixed and mastered at Metalworks Studios.

In 2012, Record became a member of the Mississauga Arts Council Committee.[9] In the same year, he received certificate on behalf of The Legislative Assembly of Ontario recognizing his musical contribution. His renown in the music industry has brought other opportunities, too. David signed an endorsement deal with Canada Scents Inc. for a women's fragrance called “Floral Kiss”.

David established the annual “David Record Creative Arts Scholarship Award” to help post-secondary students achieve their dreams in the creative arts.[10][11] In 2014, he was honored by the City Brampton Mayor, Susan Fennell, with an Arts Acclaimed Citizens Award "in acknowledgment of his contribution to and support of the creative arts in the area".[12]

2013: Kill Me With Love[edit]

In 2013, David published his debut 90-page poetry book, entitled "Kill Me With Love". In the book, David has channelled his experiences of love, loss and his personal philosophies. The launch party was broadcast and hosted by Rogers TV, and the book's release was touted by several media outlets.

2016 – present: Under Moonlight[edit]

In 2016, Record released Under Moonlight documentary film, which premiered to a sold-out Cineplex Orion Gate theatre.[13]

The film was produced by independently through David company Rise Again Entertainment Inc. The Under Moonlight is a film and soundtrack which gives a behind the scenes look at Record's international tours and lifestyle within the music industry. The film was featured on rapper 50 Cent’s official website.[14]

Right after the release of the documentary, Record started his first American tour in order to promote his album, as well as the new film. In 2017, he was appointed a FACTOR Jury member to assist Canadian artists in receiving grants to further their music careers in various aspects and the following year he founded nonprofit corporation called Rise Again Society for charitable purposes effecting change within communities.

In 2018, the Under Moonlight release entered the Billboard Top 100 ranking at 75 in the 2017 year end review. A year later in 2019, David Record won Canada’s Gold Platinum Award for Under Moonlight project.[15]
