Daya Jethalal Gada (often called Dayaben and Daya Bhabhi by society members) is a fictional character portrayed by Disha Vakani in the SAB TV sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.[1] [2] Disha Vakani, for her portrayal of Dayaben, is among the highest paid and most popular actors of the show[3].

Characterization[edit]

Daya is a Gujarati woman who was born and brought up in Ahmedabad, Gujrat. She has a brother named Sundarlal. [4] She is the wife of Jethalal Gada and the daughter-in-law of Gada family who resides in Gokuldhaam Society located in Goregaon East, Mumbai. She is a native woman who almost always wears Gujarati saris and has traditional ideology. She respects her father-in-law Champaklal Gada. She is friendly with her neighbors. She is fond of cooking and is recognized by all for her culinary skills. She is from Ahmedabad and is popularly referred to as Garba queen as she loves playing garba (a type of traditional dance of Gujrat). She is a responsible and dedicated homemaker mostly busy in household chores. Dayaben is very innocent and loves her entire family, she is a very caring neighbor. Jethalal is fond of her culinary skills. Dayaben enjoys close bonding with her mother Jeevdaya (Yesodhara) and brother Sundar, whom she calls Sundar Veera. Dayaben is a devoted wife and never refers Jethalal by name, instead she calls him Tappu ke Papa, meaning “Tapu’s father”. She is a little superstitious and believes in black magic, ghosts and bad luck etc. Dayaben is very religious and worships Maata Ji. She usually says “Heh Maa, Maata Ji” holding her hands to her head, whenever she is surprised, forgets something, or thinks something bad is to happen. Daya loves cooking and serving food to guests. For this, she is also called 'Annapoorna' in the show. She offers tea and breakfast to almost every visitor to their house. She speaks in a typical high pitched Gujarati accent. The role of Dayaben and her unique comic timing with Jethalal is one of the chief reasons for the popularity of the show. [5] Dayaben is one of the most popular characters in the show[6].
