Deepinder Goyal is an Indian entrepreneur and engineer. He is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Zomato, a multinational restaurant aggregator and food delivery company.[2]
Early life and education[edit]
Goyal was born Panjab and was raised in the small town of Muktsar.[3][4] His father was a Botany teacher and mother was an English teacher.[4] He has an elder brother.[4]
Goyal graduated from DAV College as a science student.[4] [5] He then completed an Integrated Masters degree in Mathematics and Computing from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 2005.[3] While at IIT Delhi, he played the computer game Age of Empires regularly.[4]
Career[edit]
In 2005, Goyal founded a food delivery company called Foodlet that was not successful.[5] In 2006, Goyal began working at Bain and Company in New Delhi.[6] He was a senior associate consultant when he co-founded a website with Pankaj Chaddah in 2008, after they developed the idea while working at Bain and Company.[7] They started by creating an intranet portal to help their coworkers with lunch menus, and then created the website Foodiebay.com.[7]
In 2013, Goyal told Mint that his parents needed to be convinced that leaving his "cushy job in consulting firm Bain and Co. was the right thing to do, but his wife Kanchan supported him, even though she’s not the biggest fan of the start-up lifestyle."[8] In 2010, Goyal and Chaddah changed the name of their company to Zomato,[7] to avoid sounding like "eBay."[8] In 2015, Deepti Chaudhary of Forbes India writes, "Goyal is the guy with the vision, Chaddah is the cautious one who often brings in the reality check." In 2017, Goyal told Open magazine he wants to create a "kitchenless future."[7]
Honours and awards[edit]
Personal life[edit]
Goyal married Kanchan Joshi in 2007.[4] They met as batchmates at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.[4] She completed a PhD from IIT Delhi and is an assistant mathematics professor at Delhi University.[4][11] The couple have one daughter.[4]
