Character biography[edit]

Princess of Kunthala Kingdom, Devasena is a skilled fighter and a great archer. Amarendra Baahubali falls in love with Devasena during a visit to Kuntala rajyam . Devasena eventually fell in love with Baahubali. [1] Devasena married Baahubali, with whom she would have one child, Mahendra Baahubali.

Bhallala Deva wanted Devasena's hand in marriage and made his mother Sivagami Devi promise that he would get married to Devasena . Devasena(now in love with Baahubali ) rejected the marriage proposal by Bhallaladeva and chose Baahubali instead . Furious Sivagami then declares Bhallaladeva the new king of Mahishmathi .

Baahubali eventually dies in the hands of Kattappa , his most loyal man . the day Baahubali dies Devasena gives birth to Mahendra Baahubali . Sivagami eventually learns about Bhallaladeva's treachery and orders Kattappa to get Bhalla hanged , but it was too late as Bhalla is now the only heir to the throne and now he possesses all the power. Bhalla orders his men to capture Devasena while Sivagami flees with baby Mahendra in her arms.

Devasena was then tormented for the next 25 years. She was tied to a long pillar and was humiliated by Bhalla and his father. During her time of captivity, Devasena prepares a pyre in which Bhalla would die . Devasena would eventually be freed by her son Mahendra Baahubali (now called Shivudu/Shiva).

Shivu/Shiva, after learning about his father's heritage and demise , now seeks revenge on his wicked uncle . He is now accompanied by his mother Devasena, his love interest Avanthika, his dad's most loyal man Kattappa and his people from the Ambula tribe . After a long battle Shivu/Shiva drags his uncle Bhallaladeva on to the pyre which would eventually set ablaze by the hands of Devasena .

After Bhallaladeva's death Devasena turns into the new Queen mother and pronounces her son Mahendra Baahubali as the new king of Mahishmathi.

Reception[edit]

The character of Devasena was highly praised by critics and Shetty's portrayal was equally lauded. A Firstpost article noted that the female characters in the second part were the actual heroes of the saga.[2] Comparing Devasena to Arjuna, the article described her as "a competitive warrior who can wield the bow and arrow with finesse".[2] It further noted how her character emphasized the need of freedom of choice writing that "in Devasena's case by taking archery lessons, choosing her life partner and being given the right to reject a matrimonial alliance, she can be her own person and develop into a strong personality, who doesn't break down even when chained for 25 years in the palace courtyard."[2]

Devasena's relationship with Baahubali has also been praised.[3] Reviewers have noted how Baahubali is first attracted to her because of her strength and not beauty. Firstpost wrote that "Bahubali seems to be impressed more by her technique of martial arts than her beauty — he doesn’t just think of her as a beautiful person, but as someone much more than."[3] The sequence where Baahubali teaches Devasena the art of shooting multiple arrows at once was singled out for praise. Reviewers felt that it set "the tone for the rest of their relationship, one that's built on the premise of equality."[3]

In a review published in India Today found Shetty's performance to be the biggest surprise of the film noting that she "steals the show as a princess with a mind of her own."[4]
