Douglas and Mary Beth Meyer are the Guinness World Record holders for growing the heaviest grapefruit and largest grapefruit in circumference.[1][2][3][4]

According to the couple, they purchased a grapefruit tree that was growing in a pot and later planted it under a tree in their garden.[5][6]
Their grandson had noticed one day that one of the grapefruits that was growing was particularly large. Upon noticing this, the couple paid special attention to the fruit and monitored its growth.[7] The fruit had to build a sling for it due to its weight and had to be protected against winter frost.[8] They eventually sent an application to Guinness and were declared the record holders.[9]
The grapefruit weighed 7 pounds and 14.64 ounces and measured 28.75 inches in circumference,[7] which was 13.6 ounces and 1.25 inches bigger than the previous world's largest grapefruit.[10][11][12][13]
The couple chose to freeze the grapefruit instead of eating it so they could show it off to friends. The couple intends to eventually use the seeds from the grapefruit to grow more grapefruits.[8] The couple also plan to write a book about their experience.[14]
