Dr. Lim Khong Hee is a Singaporean medical professional, speaker, and educator known for his experience in the field of surgery.[1] He is the senior consultant at Nexus Surgical and an assistant professor in the department of surgery at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.[2] He is also a member of several medical organizations, such as the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA), the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore (OMSSS).[3]

With a career spanning over two decades, Dr. Hee has been recognized for performing complex surgical procedures and for his commitment to advancing surgical education. Dr. Hee’s specialties include general surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, and bariatric and weight loss surgery.

Education[edit]

Dr. Hee obtained his medical degree from the National University of Singapore in 1992 and his postgraduate degree in 1998. Notably, he gained experience as a clinical fellow (HMDP) in upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery at Princess Alexandra Hospital (Brisbane) in 2002. In 2004, he earned a fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in general surgery and a fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

Career[edit]

Dr. Hee established his private practice in 2010, assuming the role of senior consultant at Nexus Surgical.[4] He is skilled in laparoscopic fundoplication, radical gastric resections, bariatric surgery, and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. Notably, he has gained renown for his advanced expertise in minimally invasive surgical techniques, positioning him as a notable figure in surgical innovation and patient care. Dr. Hee's proficiencies extend to specialties such as oesophageal cancer, gastric cancer, and hernia.[5]

Furthermore, Dr. Hee's areas of expertise encompass sleeve gastrectomy, a form of weight loss or bariatric surgery characterized by the removal of approximately 80% of the stomach. This procedure proves beneficial for patients dealing with weight-related concerns, along with associated issues including hypertension, heart diseases, cholesterol disorders, mental health conditions, diabetes, and cancer.[6][7]

Dr. Hee also held a senior consultant position at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He was the Chief of the Upper Gastrointestinal Service and Senior Consultant within the Department of General Surgery. In addition, he directed the Center for Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery, actively contributing to enhancing laparoscopic skills and organizing specialized training initiatives. His involvement extended to critical committees within the hospital, including the Credentials and Accreditation Committee, the Endoscopy Committee, the Quality and Patient Safety Committee, and the Hospital Transfusion Committee.[8]

Dr. Hee is a medical researcher and educator who consistently publishes articles on diverse surgical subjects. His research papers focus on oesophageal and gastric cancer, hernia, and minimally invasive surgery. He actively participates in local and regional surgical conferences and workshops, emphasizing his commitment to advancing the surgical field. He is a Clinical Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and an examiner for final technical tests for MBBS qualifications. His mentorship extends to surgical trainees, and he coordinated the Introduction to Colonoscopy Program (Virtual Reality-based).

Dr. Hee was the Track Leader for the Laparoscopy Symposium at the National Healthcare Group (NHG) Annual Scientific Congress in 2008. He also contributed to the Exit Exam preparation Course organized by the Chapter of General Surgeons.

Awards and recognitions[edit]

  • In 1998, Dr. Hee was awarded the HMDP Fellowship for the Final Master of Medicine (Surgery).
  • During 2001–02, he achieved the Fellowship of the Health Manpower Development Programme in Upper Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Surgery, granted by the Ministry of Health.
  • Dr. Hee received the Excellent Service Award (Silver) in 2005 and the Excellent Service Award (Gold) in 2006.
