Duncan Fraser was a fictional footballer who played as a midfielder and appeared in the We are United comic strip in the British boys' comic Champ, the Goal of Jimmy Grant in Victor and later the Football Picture Story Monthly until 1997.
He first appeared in the strip in February 1984.[1] His fact file on Champ was number 12 in December 1984.
Career
Club
Fraser started his career from Banks O’ Dee (apparently a small club) and then he moved to Fraserburgh. In 1983, Second Division side United paid just £15.000 for his signature.
In 83/84 he helped United win promotion which was the biggest thrill of his career, while losing to Mancastor City in the [FA Cup]] semifinal was his biggest disappointment (as of 1984). He was United’s only Scotsman in a season that most top clubs of England had at least 3 in their ranks. As Graeme Souness, Ray Wilkins and Mark Hateley moved to Italy in summer 1984 he admitted that he would like to follow their steps and play abroad, but first he would need to reach their level. He helped United win the 1986 FA Cup and the 1986 UEFA Cup and then surprising moved the Second Division Alton Rovers in 1988 and appeared in the Goal of Jimmt Grant story in Victor. Rovers paid United £1 million and Fraser playing alongside Jimmy Grant led Rovers to the Littlewoods Cup glory (against first division Liverford) and also promotion. He followed them to USA tour in summer 1989.
He returned to United where he won the European Cup a few times (his transfer was not mentioned in FPSM). In 1997 ambitious crosstown rivals Riverton City under manager Billy Ferguson (probably Scottish) offered United £6 million and Joe Pearson agreed for 34-year-old Fraser. It proved a mistake. Fraser would move to newly promoted City and help them win the league.
International
Fraser was a Scotland international.
Style of play
He was a dynamic tackling midfielder, crucial for his team’s performances. He had modelled himself on Graeme Souness as his idol watching his tapes, and biggest ambition was to play with him for Scotland. He also played as defender for United in the 1990s.
Legacy
Fraser played for 3 major English teams, winning trophies in all his spells. He was one of the most memorable midfielders in United’s history and a character that appeared in 3 publications.
Personal life
He has a younger brother Jimmy who was involved in a car accident in summer 1984. In December 1984 he stated that his biggest ambition was to earn a cap for Scotland and play with United at Wembley, something he later achieved. His favourite other team was Scotland national team and he loved visiting Scotland. He said that the best player outside the United team in the First Division was Scott Kevin Nicklish, but the most exciting player was Hedgehog Jones (Champ, 1/12/84).
- Favourite player (84/85): Graeme Souness, a player he loved to watch in action and considered him as the best in Europe.
