East Gate or Keelavasal,[1] is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India.[2][3][4]
Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is situated at the heart of the Madurai city, which is just a km from East Gate. Madurai city is developed in such a manner that places and streets surrounding it are on the four directions viz., East, West, North and South. Hence, the names of places East Gate, West Gate, North Gate and South Gate. Similarly, the streets of East Veli street, West Veli street, North Veli street, South Veli street, East Masi street, West Masi street, North Masi street and South Masi street. At the junction of East Masi street and South Masi street, an artful steel pillared lamp post was constructed to express the gratitude for John Blackburn who planned for the renovation of Madurai city, in the year 1847 when he returned to his native place after his completion of his assignment of duties.[5]
King Thirumalai Naicker Palace, which is a historical palace is located in East Gate. It was used as the residential cum official place by King Thirumalai Naicker in his tenure. It was started constructing in the year 1629 and completed by 1636. A mixture of limestone, jaggery, gooseberry, chebulic myrobalan and baheda is used as a mortar during the construction of its inner walls to get a stronger and brighter finish.[6]
Keelavasal is going to be a Public-Private Partnership Program Parking area by Madurai Corporation to curb on-road parking.[7]
Divya Prabhu, a 2014 IAS batch candidate, who is designated as the Collector of Chitradurga district of Karnataka state from October, 2022, belongs to East Gate, Madurai.[8]

Located at an altitude of about 159 m above the mean sea level, the geographical coordinates of East Gate are 9°55'07.9"N, 78°07'35.2"E (i.e., 9.918853°N, 78.126450°E). Madurai, Goripalayam, Sellur (Madurai), Simmakkal, Yanaikkal, Nelpettai and South Gate are some of the important neighbourhoods of East Gate.
Transport[edit]
So many Madurai City Corporation buses ply via. East Gate. Madurai Corporation Periyar Bus Stand is located at about 2 km from here. East Veli street, South Veli street, East Masi street and South Masi street are some of the important streets of East Gate. There is a project of Metro rail in between Tirumangalam and Othakadai in Madurai district, covering a distance of 31 km. Keelavasal Metro station is one of the Metro stations planned. Keelavasal Metro station will be constructed as an underground metro station.[9] Madurai Junction railway station which is busy round-the-clock is situated at 2 km from East Gate. From East Gate, Madurai Airport is located at about 11 km in Avaniapuram.

East Gate has a historical school namely St. Mary's Matriculation Higher Secondary School which is situated on East Veli street. A private college viz , CSI Jeyaraj Annapackiyam College of Nursing is located in East Gate.[10]

Thenthiruvalavaya Swamy Temple, which is under the control of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, is situated in East Gate.[11]
Politics[edit]
East Gate comes under Madurai South Assembly constituency, with the winner of its legislative assembly elections held in the year 2021, as M. Boominathan.[12] It also comes under Madurai Lok Sabha constituency for which the parliamentary elections were held in the year 2019 with the winner as S. Venkatesan.[13]
