(i.e., 9.933000°N, 78.129000°E). Goripalayam is one of the important areas of Madurai.[1] There is a flyover viz., Albert Victor flyover which was built 138 years ago, that connects Goripalayam and Nelpettai in Madurai over river Vaigai.[2]

Transport[edit]

Goripalayam is a central important place that a number of roads, viz., Azhagar Koil road, Albert Victor Bridge road, Kalpalam road, and Panagal (Madurai-Kallal) road intersect. The administration of Rajaji Hospital in Goripalayam suggested the Madurai Police to convert the Panagal Road (Rajaji Hospital Road) as one way to reduce traffic congestion.[3] City buses ply through Goripalayam connect almost all places of Madurai district and other districts. Nearby city bus terminus is Anna Bus Stand. Mattuthavani Bus Stand, Madurai is a bus terminus through which state-wide places are connected by road transport, which is 4 km from Goripalayam. An order has been passed by the State Government of Tamil Nadu, to begin construction of a flyover (bridge), which is 3.1 km long and 12 m wide, at a cost of ₹199.12 crores, between Goripalayam and the Arignar Anna Statue area.[4] This planned elevated highway on Alagarkoil Road from Tallakulam Outpost to Albert Victor Bridge will be some relief for commuters from traffic jams at Goripalayam junction.[5] As the construction of flyover is in progress, diversion of traffic is implemented near Goripalayam and its surrounding areas.[6] Madurai Junction railway station is at about 4 km from Goripalayam. There is a project of Metro rail in between Tirumangalam and Othakadai in Madurai district, covering a distance of 31 km. Goripalayam Metro station is one among the 20 Metro stations proposed. In between Othakadai and Goripalayam, elevated tracks are going to be constructed and from Goripalayam to Vasantha Nagar, underground tunnels are proposed for the transit.[7][8] The nearest Airport is Madurai Airport at Avaniapuram which is at about 16 km away from Goripalayam.

Goripalayam is served by a Government School and private schools such as Noyes Matriculation Higher Secondary School and OCPM Higher Secondary School, in Narimedu area. American College is located on Melur road (Azhagar Koil road). At the American College, to coincide with the National Science Day (February 28), 2022, with the objective of popularising science among the students and general public, a week-long 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' (Science Week festival) was conducted and major Science and technology institutions of the country namely, ISRO, ICMR, CSIR, DST among others had joined in disseminating the nuances in science.[9] Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women is located on Kalpalam road, Goripalayam, Madurai, Tamil Nadu - 625002 (website: http://smgacw.org). Madurai Medical College is just 2 km away from Goripalayam. Goripalayam is served by Government Rajaji Hospital and the students of Madurai Medical College practice here.

Places of Visit[edit]

Gandhi Memorial Museum, Madurai is one of the important places of visit, which is 2 km from here. The Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai, spread over a sprawling 13.5 acre campus, is visited by 6.6 lakh tourists every year. The Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has announced that Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai will be renovated at an outlay of ₹6 crore.[10] Rajaji Park near Goripalayam is also visited by a considerable number of people. Meenakshi Temple is located at 2 km from Goripalayam. For the construction works of wedding halls, boarding places for devotees, etc., a fund of Rs 35 crore (out of Rs 105 crore for 18 Tamil Nadu temples) has been allotted, by the State Government of Tamil Nadu, to Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple.[11] Prasanna Venkatachalapathy temple, Tallakulam is situated at 2 km from here. A church nearby is worshipped by a number of Christian community people. Goripalayam Mosque is located at the heart of Goripalayam. This Goripalayam Dargah stands out, crowned with a colossal dome painted in bright white and tall minarets embellished with colourful niches.[12]

Goripalayam contains a lot of business facilities. Nearby Sellur area is flooded with a lot of Handloom and Powerloom factories, that provide labour opportunities for more people from Goripalayam also.

Political notability[edit]

At the intersection of roads in Goripalayam, a standing posture statue of former political leader cum reformer 'Paumpon Muthuramalingam' is erected. Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Thevar is a freedom-fighter-cum spiritual leader; he was a significant figure in the 20th-century politics of Tamil Nadu. He was instrumental in bringing about many social reforms.[13] On the occasion of the Guru pooja of Muthuramalinga Thevar, on 30 October 2022, at the junction of Goripalayam near Thevar statue, political leaders and their subordinates, common public assembled to pay tributes to Thevar.[14]

Goripalayam area falls under the Madurai North Assembly constituency.[15] The winner of the election held in the year 2021 as the member of its assembly constituency is G. Thalapathi.[16] Also, this area belongs to Madurai Lok Sabha constituency. S. Venkatesan won the 2019 elections, as the member of its Lok Sabha constituency.[17]
