Economic Perspective on Artificial Intelligence
Economic Perspective on Artificial Intelligence (EPEAI) is an international academic conference series that examines the economic, business, and policy aspects of artificial intelligence (AI).
The conference series provides a platform for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to present and discuss work on how AI technologies influence firms, markets, labour, and governance. Founded in 2023 by the Hochschule Ruhr West (HRW) in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, EPEAI has since involved partner institutions in South Africa and the United Kingdom.[1][2]
Objectives and themes
EPEAI covers research on the economic mechanisms and societal consequences of AI diffusion in business and policy contexts. Main topics include:
- AI-based business models, entrepreneurship, and firm strategy
- Productivity, competition, market structure, and algorithmic decision-making
- Labour markets, skills, and task transformation
- Governance, ethics, and regulation of AI
- Economic indicators, digital transformation, and sustainability impacts
- Micro- and macroeconomic modelling of AI adoption and competitiveness
Organisation
The conference series is coordinated by Hochschule Ruhr West and hosted by partner universities for each edition. A scientific committee of international scholars manages the peer-review process and programme development. Each event includes keynote lectures, thematic sessions, and a poster track for early-career researchers.[1][3]
Participants and audience
EPEAI is attended by academics in economics, management, information systems, and public policy. Participants from multiple countries have contributed research papers and presentations.[2] The conference includes poster sessions and formats for early-career researchers.
Accepted papers from the 2023 edition were published in an open-access proceedings volume.[4]

Held on 6–7 March 2023 at Hochschule Ruhr West with keynotes by Conitzer, Haucap, Schuller, and Gordon[1][2] .
2024: Johannesburg (South Africa)
Held on 5–6 September 2024 at the Johannesburg Business School. Keynotes were given by Peter Norvig, Yosef Bonaparte, and Wim Naudé.[5]
2026: Salford (United Kingdom)
Scheduled for 16–17 June 2026 at the University of Salford Business School, co-hosted with HRW.[6]
Publications
- AI in Business and Economics (De Gruyter Open, 2024), edited by Isabel Lausberg and Michael Vogelsang, compiles peer-reviewed papers from the inaugural conference on topics including forecasting, marketing, accounting, and ethical implications of AI.[4]
Partnerships and support
EPEAI is organised by Hochschule Ruhr West with international partners such as the University of Johannesburg and the University of Salford. Funding and support have been provided by the DFG and institutional budgets.[1][6]
