Elena Orlando (born June 15, 1992) is an American professional ice hockey player for the Connecticut Whale of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL).
Personal life[edit]
Orlando played collegiate-level women's ice hockey and rugby for Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.[1]
Playing career[edit]
Orlando played ice hockey in Sweden for one year after college.[2]
NWHL[edit]
Orlando joined the New York Riveters for the inaugural 2015–16 NWHL season as a defender.[3] On January 8, 2016, a hit by Micaela Long on New York Riveters captain Ashley Johnston sparked a line brawl between New York Riveters and Connecticut Whale players, including Orlando. Orlando was subsequently suspended for one game by the NWHL's Player Safety Committee alongside Long.[4][5][6]
In August 2016, Orlando joined the Connecticut Whale as a practice player for the 2016–17 NWHL season season.[7]
In September 2016, Orlando was promoted to the Whale's full-time roster with a one-year, $12,000 contract following the departure of team captain Jessica Koizumi.[8] In March 2017, Orlando won an NWHL Foundation Award for her performance during the 2016/17 season.[9]
On May 18, 2017, it was announced that Orlando had re-signed with the Connecticut Whale for the 2017–18 NWHL season.[10]
