Morgan Fritz-Ward (born September 14, 1993) is an American former professional ice hockey player. She played for the New York Riveters of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). Fritz-Ward served as the alternate captain for the franchise until her retirement during the 2016-17 NWHL season.[1]

Early life[edit]

Fritz-Ward is the daughter of John and Anne Fritz-Ward and has two brothers. She attended Mason City High School and graduated from Lakeville South High School in Minnesota. She was a multi-sport athlete in track, cross-country, lacrosse and ice hockey. She was captain of her hockey team and won the offensive player of the year award. She was named to the Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association Academic All-State and All-Conference teams.[2]

Career[edit]

During college, Fritz-Ward played for Quinnipiac University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association between 2011 and 2015. Fritz-Ward captained the women's ice hockey team during her senior year.[3][4] Terming herself as a "grinder", she scored five game-winning goals among her 16 goals and 42 points in 124 games with Quinnipac.[5]

Fritz-Ward learned about the founding of the NWHL just before she graduated: "I heard about the NWHL just a few weeks before I was going to graduate and knew at that moment I wanted to be a part of it. I have given my life to the game I love and couldn't imagine giving it up just quite yet."[5] During the inaugural 2015–16 NWHL season, Fritz-Ward played for the New York Riveters as a forward and was voted in by fans to play in the 1st NWHL All-Star Game.[6] She was an alternate captain for the franchise from 2015/16 until her retirement.[7] In early 2016, Fritz-Ward was one of the first players to sign contracts with the New York Riveters for the 2016-17 NWHL season alongside Madison Packer, having signed a $15,000 one-year contract, a $2,500 increase.[8][9]

Fritz-Ward announced her retirement in December 2016 in the wake of substantial player salary cuts by the NWHL.[10][11][12][13] Fritz-Ward shared an apartment with fellow player Madison Packer. To support her self in New York, she also worked at a restaurant and at a pediatric clinic, while playing hockey and going to college to study nursing. The 50% pay cut made it unmanageable. She does not rule out a return to hockey: "If it comes to the point where the league is fully functioning and we don’t need to have pay cuts in the future there’s a possibility after I get my degree, because then I could have a full-time ‘real’ job where I don’t have to rely on the paycheck."[9]
