Ellen Lee Zhou
Ellen Lee Zhou (Chinese: 李愛晨; pinyin: Lǐ Àichén; US: /dʒoʊ/)[1] is a Chinese American politician, San Francisco government employed social worker, and currently a candidate for the office of mayor of San Francisco in the 2019 San Francisco mayoral election. Zhou also ran in the 2018 San Francisco mayoral special election,[2] receiving 4.28% of the vote,[3] placing her fifth among the nine candidates.[4] Zhou is a Republican[5], and she previously ran as an independent politician.[6][7] Zhou is considered a long-shot candidate[8] which will require a "miracle" to win the race.[9]
Political positions
According to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, Zhou's "rhetoric and sometimes vaguely outlined policy positions skew conservative",[8] though no example was provided in this article. Zhou is a supporter of increased gun ownership for self-defense and is a member of the US National Rifle Association.[10] Zhou is a supporter of US President Donald Trump,[11] and her campaign website includes the slogan "Make San Francisco Safe and Clean".[12] She told Ballotpedia that she believes those who obstructed federal agents enforcing immigration laws are traitors.[13] Zhou has also demonstrated in front of City Hall in support of a border wall.[14]
Zhou opposes marijuana legalization[11], believing San Francisco's drug policies are too lax and encourage homelessness.[15]
Her website features interviews and appearances in a documentary critical of San Francisco's policies, produced by YouTuber Stefan Molyneux.[12] She has also at times expressed doubt about San Francisco's crime statistics,[16] and has raised concerns about widespread electoral fraud in San Francisco.[17][18]
Following comments at a demonstration claiming that African Americans and Latino Americans were disproportionately targeting Asian Americans, Zhou was criticized for "[fueling] racial bias and [creating] tension" in an opinion piece in the San Francisco Examiner.[19]
Personal life
Zhou is an immigrant to the United States from rural Taishan, Guangdong, China.[20] Born in 1969, she moved to Chinatown, San Francisco in 1986 at the age of 17.[11] She has resided in San Francisco since. In 2003, she earned a master's degree in social work from San Francisco State University.[20] Zhou is a Christian and a member of the San Francisco Evangelical Free Church.[13] In 2005, she was married with two college-aged children.[20]

In public comment, Ellen Lee Zhou stated that she has faced discrimination for speaking about unfairness in elections and said San Francisco has 75,000 unlawful dead voters. She stated that the Ethics Commission is not enforcing laws against voter fraud and Super PACs and asked Commissioners to do what they were sworn to do.
