The European Biotechnology Thematic Network Association (EBTNA) is a non-profit organization based in Perugia.[1] EBTNA was established in 1996 as a European-level thematic network, with the main aim to reinforce the cooperation between higher education institutions, research centers, and the biotechnology industry.
In 2007 EBTNA was formally constituted as a legal association after more than a decade of activity as a thematic network. Its founding figures led the adoption and notarization of the official statutes in Perugia, Italy. [2][3]
History
EBTNA was established in 1996 as an EU-funded project network with the aim of standardizing biotechnology education and strengthening academia-industry collaboration; it gained official association status in Italy in 2007 under its founding president, Mariapia Viola-Magni. In 2011, Prof. Dr. Munis Dündar was elected president and remains the association’s president to this day. [2].
International cooperation
In December 2015, the representatives of EBTNA and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus held a meeting to discuss scientific cooperation. According to the academy, they discussed scientific publications, lectures of international researchers, and the organization of joint scientific events. [4]
In January 2025, EBTNA signed a framework cooperation agreement with the Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria. The agreement covered student education and training, joint research and development activities, and scientific exchanges in a number of biotechnology-related fields.[5]
In September 2025, an institutional cooperation agreement between EBTNA and the Academy of Sciences of Albania was signed during the European Biotechnology Congress in Tirana. European Biotechnology Congress
The European Biotechnology Congress is an international scientific conference on biotechnology and related sciences. The first congress took place in Istanbul, Turkey, from September 28 to October 1, 2011, in cooperation with the Turkish Medical Genetics Association. Since then the series of congresses has been held in a number of European cities, including Kayseri, Bratislava, Lecce, Bucharest, Riga, Dubrovnik, Athens, Valencia, Prague, Ljubljana, Istanbul, Tirana, and Varna. [8]
The European Biotechnology Congress 2025 took place in Tirana, Albania, from 11 to 13 September 2025. The meeting organized by EBTNA, with the support of the Academy of Science of Albania and the University of Tirana, was attended by more than 200 researchers, lecturers, industry representatives, and students, said the Union of European Academies for Science Applied to Agriculture, Food and Nature (UEAA). The European Biotechnology Congress 2026 was held in Varna, Bulgaria on 24-25 April 2026. The congress was held at Cherno More Hotel and scientific sessions on biotechnology and other related fields were held. [9]
It has been announced that the European Biotechnology Congress will be held in 2027 at the University of Grenoble, Grenoble, France[10]
The EuroBiotech Journal
The EuroBiotech Journal (EBTJ) is an open-access, peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Paradigm. The journal has been published since 2017, quarterly in English, electronic ISSN 2564-615X. [11][12]
The journal's publishing platform describes it as the official journal of EBTNA. It publishes research articles, reviews, brief reports, short communications, and opinion articles across areas of biotechnology.[12]
Governance
The association's statutes provide for a General Assembly and an Administrative Council.
