Everpool is a fictional football club that appeared in the numerous Bristish comics, predominantly the Bobby of the Blues. It is undoubtedly the club that appeared in most comic stips thtoughout history, including Roy of the Rovers. Scorcher and Football Picture Story Monthlies.[1]

Alongside Melchester Rovers and Riverton United, Everpool are the most decorated club in the British comic football and always presented as a title contenter whether its is in IPC Fleetway or DC Thomson publications.[2][3]

Everpool were nicknamed The Blues. In the first episode of the Bobby of the Blues (1970) it was mentioned that Everpool had the most trophies, in the country and a European Cup among others.

History

Possibly, the first time that Everpool's name shows up in a comi is in 1970 in the scorcher and the Bobby of the Blues story.[4] The strip was around the story of young centre forward Bobby Booth who rose to the position of captain (Feb 1971, when Mike Sutton became injured) albeit a bit reluctantly, as Mike Sutton became assistant manager to Vic Crosby. Everpool was described as a famous club.

Everpool kit in 1970-71

In 1970/71 Everpool won the championhsip leaving Oldcastle second and Merseaport 3d. They beat league leaders Oldcastle away with 2-1 on the last match day with Bobby Booth scoring twice.[5] In the summer they won an international tournament in South America after beating Meingrand Partisan 4-3 in the final.

On their way to the European Cup, Everpool eliminated Andalada Real, one of the best sides in Europe and European champions a couple years earlier (probably 1969). In 1971 , in Bruxville, Everpool beat Polslava Spartak (2-1) to become European Champions for first time (Mike Sutton and Bobby Booth scored).[6] Then they won the World Club Championship against San Lentos (1-1 away and 2-1 home).

In 1971/72, The Blues lost the title to Merseaport to win it again in 1975. Trainer of Everpool was Ron Bayliss and chairman was Harold Jenkins.

Everpool are later mentioned in the Roy of the Rovers stories a few times in the 70's and 80's and also the Hard Man. In 76/77 season they are mentioned as a bottom of the table team in the Roy of the Rovers story and they were probably got relegated. However, they beat 1-0 Rovers away in May 1977.

In 1981 they were pipped out to the league championship by Danefield United in the last match (Hard Man). In 84/85 they are still mentioned in the Roy of the Rovers story as Rovers' opponents.

From 1986 until 2003 Everpool will be mentioned in various FPSM stories.

In 1984 Bobby Marsh [lower-alpha 1] led them to the 1985 FA Cup final but broke his leg during the game. He missed out the rest of season, but he watched the FA Cup final as Everpool won it 3-1. Next season, in 1986 they won the Cup Winners Cup as they beat Hamyern 2-0 at Wembley. As an earthquacke in Italy wiped out villages and destructed 2 of main stands of Napolini football stadium. Eur.Federation decided the final to be held at Wembley. Young center-forward Rod Green got injured and Everpool manager Jackson called Bobby Marsh (born 1955) back to play in the CWC Final and he scored both goals, while he retired after the Final after fullfilling his dream, aged 32.

In 1986, Lenton City beat Everpool 3-1 in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

In 1991 Everpool lose the title in the last game to Stainford City in the Goals of Jimmy Grant story. Between 1996 and 1997 Everpool won 4 league titles (short tournaments) in the FPSM We are United story facing legendary Riverton United.

Rivalries

According to the Bobby of the Blues story he local rivals were Merseaport who Everpool beat in the last minute to claim the Championship in the early 1970s. Other opponents for the Blues were Oldcastle, Sandport, Millgate Rovers and Thamesbank.

In a ROTR Annual and Bobby Booth's Everpool were playing against Jack and Jimmy of Castleburn City and Castleburn United (Castleburn City were also mentioned in a Mark's Brothers story where Terry was loaned to Castleburn City).

Stadium

Everpool's venue was the Everpool Stadium. Later it was mentioned that they played at Goodfield Stadium.[8]

Notable managers

Vic Crosby was the manager of Everpool in the Bobby of the Blues story. He was replaced by Mike Sutton in 1971. Mike Sutton then left to manage a European club and Vic Crosby became general Manager.

After that Stonewall Jackson was appointed and disliked Bobby and dropped him! After Jackson left, Booth takes the manager's job, at first on a temporary basis. Ron Bayliss was the trainer.

Records

  • According to 1972 Scorcher Annual, Booth finished the 1970-71 season with 43 goals, breaking his dad's record for most goals in a season. He was voted Player of the Year from Everpool fans.
