The Honourable Justice Fiona Meagher is an Australian judge of the Federal Court of Australia, sitting in the Brisbane registry. She was appointed in March 2022, and served concurrently as President of the former Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) from April to November 2022 before resigning that office and continuing full-time on the Federal Court bench.[1][2][3][4][5]

Early life and education

Meagher graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws. She was admitted to the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1987 and the High Court of Australia in 1989.[3]

Career

Meagher began her legal career as Associate to the Hon Justice Paul de Jersey in 1987, then practised as a solicitor from 1988 to 1993. She was Group General Counsel and Company Secretary for Telecom New Zealand Australia from 1993, and later held senior management roles at Blake Dawson Waldron (now Ashurst) and McCullough Robertson, followed by work as a management consultant (2004–2014). She served on the Mental Health Review Tribunal Queensland from 2014 to 2018, with a Presidential Delegation from 2017 to 2018. She was appointed to the AAT in 2015 (part-time), as Senior Member in 2018 and as Deputy President and Division Head (NDIS) in 2020.[3][1]

Judicial service

Meagher was appointed a judge of the Federal Court of Australia on 31 March 2022 (Brisbane registry).[2] A ceremonial sitting of a Full Court to welcome her was held on 12 August 2022, and the Court has published the transcript.[6]

From April to November 2022, Meagher served as President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. Her resignation as President took effect on 30 November 2022; she remained a judge of the Federal Court on a full-time basis.[4][5]

Independent legal media have reported matters before Meagher since her appointment, including interlocutory and appellate decisions in regulatory and commercial cases.[7]
