FiscalityONE is a low footprint business management (ERP/MRP/WMS) software application for Microsoft Windows.

The application comprises highly integrated software modules that provide application-specific functionality within a tabbed spreadsheet-like host user interface.

The product is intended to assist with finance, manufacturing, supply chains, and integration with external electronic commerce systems for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and subsidiaries of larger international groups, where, for example, FiscalityONE was implemented at the UK's largest pharmaceutical manufacturer in order to bridge a critical gap in functionality of their global system.

For modifications of the system, the proprietary programming language C/AL is used.

    Redevelopment[edit]

    • The latest version, released in July 2017, is a radical entire re-write of the original 23 year old source code.
    • The database structures were migrated from a collection of Microsoft Access databases to Postgresql running on an Ubuntu_(operating_system) 64bit 14.04LTS virtualised server.
    • A great deal of the application code and database logic was shifted from the Windows client to PostgreSQL/PLPGSQL/Python/Ruby functions and triggers, with enormous performance and data integrity benefits.
    • Several previously separate modules were also merged into one application during the re-development.
    • There was also significant work done to ensure that the software would perform well on modern versions of Windows, both running with restricted user rights and with UAC enabled at various levels.

    Touch Screen Interfaces[edit]

Many of the user interfaces were completely redesigned for highly optimised touch-screen input, mainly for use in the production & warehouse environments, where complex input via a keyboard is both time consuming and difficult for users who are less computer literate. The interfaces were designed using bright colours, with large buttons and fonts to be easily view-able from a distance away.

    Optimisation for low-power compute sticks[edit]

One of the key objectives during the re-write was to ensure that the software's foot print (memory requirements, CPU load, network activity) were kept to a minimum in order to ensure good performance on new small low-cost, low-power Intel Atom based compute sticks (connected to the LAN via ethernet or WIFI). This new development negated the need for existing thin-client terminals and remote-desktop servers as previously used.

Terminals can now be installed deeper into production environments without requiring experience heavy duty hardware. This is useful in operations such as manufacturing and construction, where dirt and other challenging environmental factors make the operation of equipment difficult or slow.

    AddIns[edit]

FiscalityONE's core functionality can be easily extended via the development of both entirely new application modules and additional application COM AddIns, in a similar way to other Windows applications, such as Microsoft Excel. FiscalityONE is notable in that a great deal of freedom is given to developers, and they are not required to obtain additional developer licenses or to make huge payment for special developer subscriptions.

AddIns can extend FiscalityONE's core functionality, say to a specific industry, without having to heavily customise or bespoke the core application code.

    History[edit]

The initial version of FiscalityONE was developed under the code name ‘XPOS’ by Steven Crowley in the mid’ 1990s (written mostly in Visual Basic 3 and running on Windows 3.11 and Windows 95). Starting initially as a procurement system for a leading TV & film production/special-effects house based in London, the system grew to include broader functionality for warehouse inventory management, customer order fulfilment, accounting and asset management (for physical assets deployed in safety critical environments).

    Features[edit]

    • Financial management
    • Supply chain management
    • Manufacturing
    • Distribution
    • Sales and marketing
    • Warehouse management
    • Asset management (installed parts, expiry dates & maintenance schedules)
    • Product image management
    • WebCMS

    Architecture[edit]

FiscailtyONE software is composed of two major components:

    • The Database Server: a database that stores the FiscalityONE data (PostgreSQL) (with functions and triggers written in PLPGSQL, Python & Ruby). Previous versions included support for MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and Firebird. PostgreSQL is a very mature object-relational database system (ORDBMS) largely regarded as the world’s most powerful open-source cross-platform database, initially released 21 years ago.
    • The COM based Windows client software: the actual GUI that the user interacts with, which can host multiple applications. It’s split into discrete COM servers which can be externally programmable with any COM aware language.

    – Application logic / API – Interface Component (Manufacturing, Accounting etc) – Interface Component AddIns (Industry specific) – Grid Interface (generic) – Grid Interface AddIns

Various parts of FiscalityONE are user-programmable via both VBScript and JavaScript to tailored the software to the needs of each user. This allow various customisations to be made without changing the core code.
