Steven Williams in 2018

Francis is a fictional character, created and portrayed by Steven Williams, better known as Boogie2988. Introduced in 2009, The first of many videos featured "Francis" ranting about fantasy tabletop role-playing game (RPG) Dungeons and Dragons.[1] The character is also known for his rants and commentary about various video games, video game developers and companies including Playstation,[2][3] Microsoft and Xbox which has made him a well known character in nerd culture.[4]

Basis[edit]

The Francis character is based on stereotypes of nerdy video game players and often parodies trending video game news, reaction, and culture.

Williams based the character on his early life experiences and has said that he wants viewers to hate the character for embodying gamer stereotypes.[5]

Portrayals[edit]

Francis' sister was portrayed by Williams' ex-wife Desiree "Dez", and was often unseen. On December 19, 2017, Williams announced that Desiree filed for divorce and had planned to for a while, but waited until he sufficiently recovered from his gastric bypass surgery. The divorce was finalized on February 13, 2018.[6]

The videos have also showed the character Francis breaking personal items including his Xbox, Nintendo Switch and tearing down Christmas trees.

Popular videos[edit]

Among many popular videos, Williams' video titled "Francis Rages - Where's My Goddamned Mountain Dew?" uploaded on January 11, 2012 sparked Francis' popularity. The video, featuring an angry Francis, begins a tirade towards his friends about drinking his Mountain Dew, which was the Walmart knock-off brand Mountain Lightning. The video has amassed over 24.5 million views as of July 2022.[7] Williams has stated that the video was inspired by Angry Grandpa's (October 16, 1950 – December 10, 2017) video tirade about pecan pinwheels.
