Gaetano Posterino
Gaetano Posterino (* April 15, 1974 in Cosenza, Italy) is an Italian dancer, choreographer, and dance director for ballet, dance theatre, and opera. At the age of 6, he began his dance education in Cosenza (Italy). From 1985 to 1989, he graduated with a scholarship from the National Ballet School of Canada in Toronto.
Artistic career as ballet dancer
From 1989 onwards, following his graduation, he started his career in Italy with the Ballet L'Ensemble de Micha Van Hoecke, Balletto di Toscana, and at the National Opera House in Catania. Then Gaetano Posterino danced internationally as a soloist for various well-known ballet companies in Argentina, the USA, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, and Germany.
He performed in choreographic works by, e.g., Oscar Araiz, Elgi Tomasson, Derek Daine, Richard Wherlock, Pablo Ventura, Enrico C. Musmeci, Peter Schaufuss, James Sutherland, Nils Christe, Ben van Cauwenbergh, Boris Traline, Tarek Assan, Antonio Gomes, Jiří Kylián, Mats Ek, Inbal Pinto, Ed Wubbe, and Stephan Thoss.
In 2001, Boris Traline engaged him for Stars of the XXI Century at the Roman Theatre of Verona, with a worldwide tour.
From 2000 to 2005, Ben van Cauwenbergh contracted him as first soloist for the Hessian State Theatre Wiesbaden.
Artistic career as choreographer
At an early stage, he discovered his talent for choreography. Since 1995, parallel to his dance career, Gaetano Posterino has worked as artistic director, choreographer, and ballet master for numerous ballet companies, theatres, and dance festivals. His first long-term engagements began with guest choreographies for the International May Festival Wiesbaden from 2001 to 2004.
In 2004, he was promoted as choreographer in residence by Ben van Cauwenbergh for the Hessian State Theatre Wiesbaden. There, he created, until 2007, besides the series I-X of contemporary dance, various new creations for the Wiesbaden Ballet repertoire.
Also in 2004, he began his engagement as artistic director and main choreographer for the International Dance Theatre Reutlingen, where he created numerous new works for ballet and dance theatre.
From 2008 to 2011, Gaetano Posterino created works as choreographer in residence under the direction of Robert Conn for the Augsburg Ballet at the Augsburg Theatre.
Through further engagements, co-productions, guest choreographies, and with his Posterino Dance Company, he tours as a freelance choreographer in Europe. This includes four productions of the opera Schwanda der Dudelsackpfeifer, for which he was in charge as choreographer under the direction of Axel Köhler for Semperoper Dresden in 2012, 2014, and 2016, as well as for Teatro Massimo di Palermo. The magazine Opernwelt chose this production at Semperoper Dresden as the rediscovery of the year 2011/2012.
