Gbenga Adeku

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Gbenga Adeku is a Nigerian upcycle artist, environmental and climate change activist. His art work pieces are created from plastic wastes to raise awareness about hazards of plastic wastes on the environment and climate change.[1][2]

Background and art work[edit]

Gbenga Adeku was born to Segun Adeku, a neo-traditional art printmaker.[3][4] Adeku earned a bachelor's degree in Fine and Applied Art from Obafemi Awolowo University. After graduation, Adeku practiced as a freelance illustrator before switching to plastic arts after meeting Dotun Popoola, a metal sculptor. Adeku conceived the plastic art idea when he noticed that flooding in his local community was caused by plastic wastes blocking the waterways.[5] He then started collecting pet bottles and beverage cans from women in his community and transforming them into art pieces to create awareness for plastic wastes recycling to protect the environment and climate change.[6] In 2019, he founded Xtetixupcycle organisation focused on creating climate change awareness and training other upcycle artists. He is currently an ambassador to International Breweries Plc and Father's Love Forum Nigeria.[7][8]
