Genbanojō (Japanese: げんばのじょう-玄蕃之丞-) is an anime short film directed by Takumi Doyama and animated by Nippon Animation studio, was released on March 11, 2017 in Japan. It was one of four short films created for the Young Animator Training Project's Anime Tamago 2017.[1] The story is based on a folk story of Shiojiri in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.

Plot Summary[edit]

A girl named Hana encounters three fox spirits that can take on human form named Genbanojō, O-Natsu, and Shinzaemon. Genbanojō has Hana not reveal their secret by granting her one wish. Her wish is to let her great-grandmother see cherry blossoms like she used to decades ago.

Genbanojō (玄蕃之丞)
Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi (Japanese); Jacob Takanashi (English)
The titular character, Genbanojō is the charismatic leader of a traveling troupe. His abilities consist of shapeshifting and creating illusion, and his favorite food is oyaki.
O-Natsu (お夏)
Voiced by: Rina Satō (Japanese); TBA (English)
A fox spirit taking the form of an elegant woman. Her name in Japanese means "summer".
Shinzaemon (新左衛門)
Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae (Japanese); Vic Mignogna (English)
A fox spirit taking the form of an slim young man.
Hana (はな)
Voiced by: Runa Tamano (Japanese); Haileigh Todd (English)
Hana is a young gentle girl who loves her family, especially her great-grandmother Chiyo. While she's with Genbanojō and his troupe, the village go out and look for her.
Chiyo (千代)
Voiced by: Reiko Suzuki (Japanese); Nola Klop (English)
Hana's great-grandmother. In the past, she and her husband wondered in the woods one night and stumbled upon cherry blossoms in a clearing.

In cooperation with the Japan Foundation, a Latin Spanish version of the film was produced. Below are the voice actors for the five main characters and the narrator.

Screenings[edit]

Anime Tamago 2017[edit]

Along with Charanpoland no Bōken (ちゃらんぽ島の物語, lit. The Charanpoland Adventure), Red Ash: Gearworld, and Zunda Horizon (ずんだホライずん, Zunda Horaizun), Genbanojō screened at a HUMAX Cinemas theater in Ikebukuro on March 11, 2017, and they were screened at a theater in Shinjuku from April 22 to 28.[4]

Anime Matsuri 2022[edit]

On July 17, 2022, Anime Matsuri Co-founder Deneice Leigh announced that the event organizers have licensed and produced English versions of Genbanojō and Zip! Shimezo (チャックシメゾウ, lit. Chuck Shimezō) with Vic Mignogna as ADR director and voice actor. Both short films were screened at Anime Matsuri on July 29 with the English cast and Nippon Animation officials present.[3] The release of both English versions is yet to be announced.
