Geno (Japanese: ジーノ, Hepburn: Jino),[1] is a character appearing in the 1996 role-playing video game Super Mario RPG and an intellectual property of Square Enix. He is a doll possessed by a celestial spirit from the Star Road and serves as one of Mario's partners. The character has been well received by the Super Smash Bros. community and Masahiro Sakurai wanted the character as a playable fighter in the series.

Creation and characteristics[edit]

Geno was designed by graphic designer Kazuyuki Kurashima and was described as Pinocchio.[2] Some of Geno earlier designs give a different vibe and some concept pieces keep the mechanical elements such as "the idea of Geno as a toy brought to life" while one is seemingly a Sonic-inspired hairstyle.[3] Geno is a celestial warrior and wooden doll possessed by a spirit from the Star Road and serves as one of Mario's partners. Geno is also a good choice for a partner if you want offense and a very potent offensive character overall having the highest speed and magic.[4] Geno's real name was "♥♪!?" while in the Japanese version, he refers his name as being part of the “Star Language” which the localization programmers might decided to insert a basic ASCII character set and during the translation phase, Ted Woolsey say that “Okay, we need some crazy characters here, what’s available?”.[5]

Appearances[edit]

In Super Mario RPG, Geno was sent to the Mushroom Kingdom to recover the seven pieces of the Star Road scattering them throughout the game by using a wooden doll from Gaz, but he took on the doll's name to make pronunciation simpler with the physical world and left wandering around the Forest Maze. Geno later meets Mario and his party and begins searching for the star pieces with them. After destroying Smithy and reclaiming the seven pieces of the Star Road, he left the doll after thanking his friends and paves the way for the game's happy ending.[6]

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, a Geno doll appears Lili-Mushroom's Game Center minigame, giving the player instructions on the minigame. The credits of the game were also given Geno as a property and copyright of Square Enix.[7] He was removed in the 3DS remake of the same game.[8]

Masahiro Sakurai who have wanted Geno to be a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. series

Masahiro Sakurai had wanted the character to be a playable character because he has a gun for a hand and very popular.[9] Geno was announced in a Nintendo Direct presentation as a Mii Fighter costume for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.[10] In Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Geno appears as a spirit as part of the Super Mario RPG series. Indicating that he is not part of the Mario series since it is owned by Square Enix. He has also appears as a Mii costume along with the arrival of Sephiroth as a playable fighter.[11]

Reception[edit]

Kensuke Tanabe, the producer of Paper Mario: The Origami King indicated that the publisher required original characters for its RPGs but since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, it's no longer possible to modify Mario characters or create original characters that touch on the Mario universe, Tanabe interview with Video Games Chronicle about using characters as bosses and the needed of original characters who don't involve the Mario universe. Fans and communities on Tumbir, Pinterest and Twitter express their love, admiration and pay respect for Geno.[6]

Fans had clamoring for Geno’s inclusion when they were waiting for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.[12] Geno has been a fan-favorite for many fans in both Japanese and North American communities and one of the highest requested fan ballots for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.[13] According to a poll on the Nintendo website, Geno was tied with Mallow as the 8th most requested Mario character for a potential sequel to the original Super Smash Bros.[14] Geno has continually been ignored by Nintendo, but despite outcry from fans who want to see Geno appears.[15] Fans also asks Nintendo in an online petition on Charge.org to bring back Geno in either a remake or a sequel to Super Mario RPG, future installments of the Mario series and the Super Smash Bros. series.[16] Fangamer has teamed up with figurine maker Camille Young to make a Geno figure for Limited edition.[17]
