George King (January 23, 1919 - July 12, 1997) was Founder-President of The Aetherius Society, a worldwide spiritual organisation based in London (UK) and Hollywood (USA). He was also an inventor, author, lecturer, spiritual healer and occultist.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]
Early years[edit]
George King was born in Wellington, Shropshire to George and Mary King on January 23, 1919. Much of his childhood was spent in North Yorkshire where he developed the straight-forward, no nonesense character which became part of his tradmark throughout his life, both in private and on the lecture platform. George King claims that both his mother and grandmother were psychics and relates how in the 'early days' his mother was a very deep trance medium.[9] From an early age he showed a varied interest in spiritual topics starting with orthodox Christianity to what he called the 'occult and spiritual sciences'.[10][11] In a book about spiritual healing published in 1979 called You Too Can Heal George King relates how he gave his first quite good demonstration of spiritual healing at the age of eleven to his mother.[12] Afterwards an 'angelic Being' purportedly appeared to him and stated that his mother was healed.[13] [14] As an alleged natural psychic his interest in 'metaphysics' led him to investigate the subject of life-after-death as an already practicing 'trance medium' to which he is claimed to have spent considerable time developing over the course of several years. During this period he claimed to have contacted William Shakespeare, Sir Oliver Lodge, Sir Thomas Lipton and others who had 'passed on'.[15]
At the beginning of the second World War George King became a Section leader Fireman during an emergency task force, as a part-time volunteer.[16][17] In 1940 he participated in the Dunkirk evacuation on the crew of a Thames Fire float, and served in the aftermath of the London Blitz which followed. When hostilities ceased in 1945, the young George King, still only 26, began to study Yoga — especially the higher forms, which focus especially on mental and spiritual development. These included the various healing arts such as color healing, Prayer, Spiritual Healing and as well as the yogic practices of Mantra, Pranayama and Contemplation.[18][19][20]
A Master of Yoga[edit]
After the war, King turned to the practice of certain advanced practices of Yoga, and the study of eastern mysticism and what he termed 'metaphysics'.[21] He is said to have practised certain Yoga disciplines for eight to ten hours per day, while holding down a full-time employment.[22] This is said to have culminated in 'Samadhi' or enlightenment (described by him in detail in The Nine Freedoms).[23] It was in 1954 that a certain experience - which has been termed 'The Command' - led him to form a spiritual organization. Living in a small flat in Maida Vale, London at the time, King described a voice which came loud and clear from outside of himself saying 'Prepare yourself. You are to become the voice of Interplanetary Parliament' . Shocked by this event, King frustratedly searched for answers over the following week, until finally, he claimed to have been 'visited' by a Yogi - resident in India at that time - who passed through a locked door and sat down in the room. King claimed he was given certain information, and told that he would receive a letter from a certain school of Yoga, where he would receive instruction in certain practices, to prepare him for his work to come. This work involved adopting an alleged 'deep yogic trance' in order to act as a channel through which higher intelligences from outside of this world would impart information of spiritual significance (See: Mental Transmission).[24] He was also told that others would be brought into his orbit in order to form an organization to help with spreading this information throughout the world.[25]
Aetherius Society[edit]
In 1954, King left his employment at the time to form a spiritual organization called The Aetherius Society in order to help in the spreading of 'advanced' metaphysical teachings through lectures, seminars, workshops and literature, and other spiritual work. Before the inception of the Aetherius Society, in the tradition of the great yogis, King gave away all his possessions.
It was at a time when nuclear experimentation was at its height, and King claimed that the interest from outside of this world was because of mankind's delving into the atom, and that the potential for total world annihilation was 'again' possible – exacerbated by the onset of the cold war. It was also a time of world interest in the seemingly new phenomenon of UFOs. King was also known to have stated that because of its nature, The Aetherius Society would never become a large organization.
In 1959 King founded the "American Headquarters of The Aetherius Society" in Los Angeles the temple of the Aetherius Society, the Sunday services at which the general public was welcome to attend - which eventually re-located and is now at Afton Place, Los Angeles. The European headquarters and temple remain in London. Groups and centres also now exist in other parts of the U.K., America, Australia, New Zealand and Portugal.
Philosophy[edit]
Th Aetherius Society bases its principals on service to humanity. Karma and reincarnation lie at the core of its beliefs. King propounded the theory that mankind had existed for millions of years, and had been through many cycles of existence, each time reaching high points of culture and science, only to fall foul of inherent traits such as greed and hatred, culminating in destruction. "Maldek", is believed to have been a planet which mankind once inhabited, but completely destroyed. King believed asteroid belt represents the remainder of the planet, although current scientific evidence suggests the asteroid belt was never a planet [1]. Lemuria and Atlantis were subsequent civilizations also destroyed - beliefs also propounded by The Theosophical Society. Some ancient eastern texts also describe past civilizations destroyed by advanced weapons.
King claimed that these past incarnations of humanity, with a propensity to belligerence rather than peace, have created a "negative" Karmic pattern for mankind, which has had repercussions down the ages, making it even more difficult for mankind to break the constant cycle of destruction and never really learning from its mistakes. He claimed that the world was now reaching a point in its history which echoed the past, and that total annihilation was again possible. But that humanity could alter its negative pattern by "manipulating Karma" through service.
King taught that thoughts are essentially things, energy which goes out and affects someone or something, and that thoughts are usually uncontrolled, and driven by emotion - also a concept taught by the Yogi's of the east. King taught students that controlled thought, emotion, and "dynamic prayer", could help considerably to heal the world and bring it into a more positive light, in order to move forward and break the negative cycle.
He also claimed that the Earth, like all the heavenly bodies, is a living, breathing intelligence, but highly spiritually evolved, and "allows" mankind to reside here, albeit to "Her" detriment. He also propounded the philosophy that God is not a separate entity, but every single thing contained in the universe, seen and unseen. That the universe is God, expressing itself at many levels, and that human beings are just small aspects of this manifestation.
King claims he aided Martians in defeating aquatic aliens called "Garouche" who sought to destroy all terrestrial life on Earth and claim oceans for themselves.[26]
Claimed Honours and Titles[edit]
The Aetherius Society usually refers to King as "Doctor George King".[27] The society does not, however, document where King received his doctorate. David Barrett in A Brief Guide to Secret Religions states King received his doctorate from "...the International Theological Seminary of California, a degree mill with no accreditation..."[28]
In 1980, King was dubbed 'Sir George King' by Robert Khimchiachvili, a man who claims to be a prince and the 74th Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta. The United States Court of Appeals Second Circuit lists other known aliases of Khimchiachvili as "Dr. Von Badische; Cesar A. Viana; Christopher Berwick".[29] According to the NY Sun Khimchiachvili "ran a bogus Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta from his faux-marble apartment (filled with equally genuine Louis XV furniture) at 116 Central Park South. If you had a passage fee, he had a gong for you, and hundreds of men and women with more money than sense each paid him up to $30,000 for his phony knighthoods."[30] The NY Daily News in 2002 referred to Khimchiachvili as "a fugitive."[31] In August 2002, Khimchiachvili and two associates were convicted of "conspiracy and wire fraud after they swindled about $3 million from people by promising them riches bankrolled by a make-believe African kingdom."[32]
In 1986 King was nominated and given the Freedom of the City of London, and membership of the Freemen of England. Anyone who has been on the City of London Electoral Roll for a minimum of one year may obtain this designation.[33] In 1992 he applied for a Grant of Arms, or Letters Patent of Armorial Bearings, which was officially presented to 'The Most Reverend George King' by the Bluemantle Pursuivant of the College of Arms London, in a ceremonial presentation which took place in America.[34][35][36] A Grant of Arms is applied for. Anyone can receive a Grant of Arms if one can "prove that an ancestor have had his arms recorded in the registers of the College."
The society's official King biography claims King was a Chaplain of the American Federation of Police.[27] The organization's full name is "American Federation of Police and Concerned Citizens".[37] Anyone who is a concern citizen appears to be able to become a member for $36.[38] Charity Navigator gives this organization its lowest ranking (1 star).[39] Several police organizations have warned that solicitation by the American Federation of Police are possible scams.[40][41][42] The site does not appear to have any official way to apply for a position as a chaplain and does not provide any list of official chaplains.
According to skeptic James Randi George King's titles of 'Reverend', 'Doctor' and 'Sir' are unverified.[43]
