Gervonta Davis vs. Rolando Romero is an upcoming lightweight professional boxing match contested between WBA (Regular) champion Gervonta Davis, and former WBA interim champion Rolando Romero. The fight will take place on May 28, 2022 at the Barclays Center in New York City.[1]

Background[edit]

Gervonta Davis had originally been scheduled to face Rolando Romero on December 5, 2021 in Los Angeles, California on Showtime pay-per-view. The latter was formerly the WBA interim lightweight champion, until he was named Davis' mandatory challenger after the WBA vacated all interim titles.[2] However, a month before the fight was scheduled to take place, Romero was removed from the event, after multiple women came forward to level sexual assault allegations against him. Romero maintained his innocence: "Although the allegations against me are totally false and I will prove that through the legal process, I agree that it is in the best interest of everyone involved that I not participate in the upcoming pay-per-view event. After clearing my name I will return to the ring as soon as possible."[3]

In light of these developments, Romero was replaced with Isaac Cruz. Davis instead defended his WBA (Regular) title against Cruz on December 5, with a competitive fight ending in a twelve-round unanimous decision victory for the defending champion, with scores of 116–112 and 115–113 twice in favor of Davis.[4]

In January 2022, Romero announced that he had been cleared as innocent, stating, "the investigation into the allegations made against me has been formally closed. Charges were not filed because the allegations could not be substantiated because, as I always stated, I am innocent."[5] In March, the fight was officially announced as having been rescheduled for May 28 at the Barclays Center.[1]
