First in the season two episode "Land of the Lost",[2] then in the season three episode "Here I Go Again",[3] the season four episode "Legends of To-Meow-Meow",[4] Pemberton transitioned to a fully physical apperance for the character throught the seventh season.[5]

Fictional character biography[edit]

In the first and second season of the series, Legends of Tomorrow, Gideon does not have much of an active role more staying on the sidelines providing exposition. Her character is the artificial intelligence operating the Waverider. Starting in the second season Gideon takes more of an active role. In the episode "Land of the Lost" Gideon appears inside of Rip Hunters mind, here it is implied that there is a romantic relationship between the two.[6] In the season three episode "Here I Go Again" she puts Zari Tomaz in a time loop. This convinces Zari to stay with the Legends.

In the fifth season episode "Swan Thong", Gideon was temporary removed from the Waverider and converted into the Loom of Fate. She is then reverted back to her stand form in the Waverider by Zari Tarazi, Zari Tomaz, and Behrad Tarazi.

In the sixth season Gideon did her usual job as the Legends searched for Sara Lance. She eventual located Spooner Cruz. Ava Sharpe removes Gideon from the Waverider. She is then installed into a television in John Constantine's house.

In the seventh season seven, the Waverider is destroyed seemingly killing Gideon. However Gideon is accidentally revived as a human and modified to interact with the Legends. Gideon becomes a proper member of the Legends and assists them with missions. In the Legends final confrontation with AI Gideon, Gideon convinces the robot clones to be better than the Legends. Later Gideon convinces AI Gideon to not kill the Legends and instead let them retire. In exchange Gideon would becomes the new time captain, and Computer Gideon would serve as her AI. Ultimately in the final mission with the Legends, the team along with Gideon is arrested by the Time Police for breaking the timeline.

Creation and development[edit]

In an interview with Amy Pemberton when she was asked about the audition for the character she did not give a specific date but she claimed that the year was 2016.[7] Ultimately, Pemberton was cast as Gideon and would go onto play the character for the entirety of the shows run.[8] In the episode "Crisis on Earth-X, Part 2", she appears on Legends's parent show Arrow.z

In 2021 the decision was made to have Pemberton play the character as an actress as opposed to a voice actress,[9]

Reception[edit]

Initial reaction to the character was met with confusion due to the Morena Baccarin version of the character on The Flash.[10]

The reception to the character was generally positive. Screen Rant claimed that while Gideon started out as simply the ships ai she grew into her own character and became a true member of the team.[11] Nicole Drum of Comicbook.com praised Pembertons casting claiming it was perfect.[12] In a later article on Comicbook.com Drum once again mirrored her previous claim saying that Gideon enered her place among the Legneds and was exicited to see where they would take the character. Gideons first outing with a physical form was met with mixed reviews. Carissa Pavlica of TVfanatic, found herself annoyed by Gideon.[13] While Oliver Sava of The A.V. Club praised the love story between Gideon and Rip Hunter. Fansided's Steven Lam claimed that the Gideon x Rip Hunter relationship was an idea worth exploring.[14] Gideon's second psychical appearance received more praise. Den of Geek writer Jim Dandeneau, called the Zari and Gideon pairing an odd choice but an ultamitly successful one.[15] Dandeneau also praised the Gideon centric episode "wvrdr_error_100<oest-of-th3-gs.gid30n> not found" claiming that Pemberton "nailed her role".[16] In a SyFy article Trent Moore wrote the Gideon was a true OG legends all along and proclaims her as the heart of the team.[17]

The character was named the best character in Legends of Tomorrow's seventh season by Screen Rant's Shaurya Thapa. Thapa praised [18]
