The Global Day of Jihad, also known as the Global Day of Rage, occurred on 13 October 2023. Two days prior, former Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal called for global "jihad" in support of Palestinian communities affected by the 2023 Israel–Hamas war.[1][2][3]

While protests were widespread, recorded attacks were minimal. The pronouncement led to widespread fears for the safety of both global Jewish communities, as well as the general public, resulting in numerous cancellations of public events, as well as increases in security and policing.[4][5][6]

Background[edit]

On 10 October 2023, former Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal delivered the following pre-recorded statement to Reuters:

"[We must] head to the squares and streets of the Arab and Islamic world on Friday… Tribes of Jordan, sons of Jordan, brothers and sisters of Jordan... This is a moment of truth and the borders are close to you, you all know your responsibility… To all scholars who teach jihad... to all who teach and learn, this is a moment for the application (of theories)."[7]

Global response[edit]

In the United States, federal and local authorities took measures to increase security and police patrols on the day.[8] As a precaution, numerous schools, both public and Jewish, were closed for the day.[9][10] In Los Angeles, striking SAG-AFTRA workers suspended their picketing out of safety concerns.[11]

Attacks[edit]

France[edit]

In Arras, France, a man of Chechen origin with suspected ties to Islamic extremism stabbed a teacher to death at his former high school and critically wounded two others.[2]

United States[edit]

In Plainfield, Illinois, a 71 year-old man was charged with first-degree murder and hate crimes for stabbing a 6-year old Palestinian American boy to death and stabbing his mother more than a dozen times.[12] According to the man's wife, the man had been concerned about events that could occur on October 13.[12]
