Greenlyte Carbon Technologies is a German direct air capture (DAC) company founded in 2022 that develops technology to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.[1] The company uses a proprietary liquid-based absorption process that captures CO2 while producing green hydrogen as a byproduct.[5] Based in Essen, Germany, Greenlyte has raised over €20 million in funding and operates pilot facilities for carbon capture.[1][6]

History

Greenlyte Carbon Technologies was founded in September 2022 by chemist Peter Matthias Behr, mechanical engineer Florian Hildebrand, and industrial engineer Niklas Friederichsen.[7] The technology is based on research conducted by Behr at the University of Duisburg-Essen, resulting in over 25 research papers.[4][8]

In 2023, the company commissioned its first pilot plant, capable of removing approximately 100 tonnes of CO2 annually.[9] In November 2024, Greenlyte was selected as one of 25 finalists from 115 international candidates at the Falling Walls Ventures conference in Berlin.[9]

Technology

Greenlyte's patent-protected technology uses a three-step process for carbon capture:[10]

  1. Absorption: CO2 from ambient air is absorbed in a liquid carbonate sorbent solution
  2. Precipitation: The absorbed CO2 is precipitated as hydrogen carbonate
  3. Desorption: The CO2 is released through alkaline water electrolysis or thermal processes using low-grade waste heat[5]

The process requires approximately 600 kWh per ton of CO2 captured, significantly lower than traditional DAC methods.[11] The alkaline water electrolysis step produces green hydrogen as a valuable byproduct, contributing to the economic viability of the process.[10]

The company claims its technology can achieve CO2 removal costs of approximately $80 per tonne, compared to the current industry average of $600-$1,000 per tonne.[4]

Projects and partnerships

Marl eMethanol facility

In March 2025, Greenlyte announced it had been recommended for multi-million Euro grant funding through the "Produktives.NRW" program to develop a first-of-a-kind (FOAK) Direct Air Capture to e-methanol facility at the chemical park in Marl, Germany.[12] The facility will have a production capacity of up to 1,000 tons of eMethanol annually, with a total investment of approximately €25 million.[12] Operations are expected to begin by late 2026.[12]

Deep Sky partnership

In January 2024, Greenlyte partnered with Montreal-based Deep Sky to install a DAC unit in Quebec, Canada.[13] The system, with a capacity to remove 100 tons of CO2 annually, will be installed in 2025 and will leverage Quebec's renewable hydroelectric energy.[13]

Cella partnership

Greenlyte announced a partnership with US-based carbon storage company Cella to deliver and install a DAC unit at Cella's demonstration project in Kenya.[14] The project involves injecting captured atmospheric CO2 into volcanic rocks for permanent mineralization and storage.[14]

Funding

Since its founding in 2022, Greenlyte has raised over €20 million in funding through multiple rounds:[1]

In February 2024, the company closed a €10.5 million pre-Series A funding round co-led by Earlybird Venture Capital and Green Generation Fund, with participation from Carbon Removal Partners, Partech, and board member Dr. Udo Jung.[1][15]

According to various sources, the company's total funding as of 2024 exceeds $26 million (approximately €24 million).[4]
