Hüseyin Arda (born 15 June 1969, in Eskişehir, Turkey) is a Turkish sculptor, who became known for his large-format metal letters, laying a trail of words throughout Germany. Arda, who was one of the last residents leaving his studio at the Kunsthaus Tacheles in Berlin, which has been squatted by numerous artists since 1990[1], is also gaining attention for his life-sized sculptures of animals and nudes of welded metal, characterized by his typical surface rust finish.[2]

Biography[edit]

Arda first studied medicine at the Gülhane Military Medical Academy in Ankara, then went to Japan and devoted himself to Butoh dance. From 1989 to 1990 he worked as a dancer and choreographer in Tokyo. He came to Berlin in 1990 as a member of the Theater Malade and stayed in the city. In 1990 he was one of the first to occupy the Kunsthaus Tacheles on Oranienburger Straße in Berlin. He started with metalwork and built a metal workshop in Tacheles in 1992. Until the final eviction of the courtyard in 2013[3], he was in charge of the Metallwerkstatt Tacheles and was committed to maintaining the house.[4][5] From 2004 to 2008 he ran the Berlin arthouse cinema Sputnik.

On the one hand, Arda is known for large metal sculptures, which he welds together from tiny materials, and on the other, for meter-high steel letters, which he arranges into word sculptures. In addition to his Berlin studio, Arda has been operating another location in Istanbul since 2014. He is visiting professor for contemporary art at the Istanbul Technical University.[6]

The word project[edit]

The word project emerged from the interactive art project Words for Berlin (2003-2007), with which Arda wanted to show how art, the artists and the spectator can be brought together in urban open spaces.

A wide variety of people and groups were asked which term is particularly important to them and which most expresses their dreams, hopes or attitude towards life.[7] The participants were asked to express themselves and to help shape art in the urban space.

His word sculptures can be seen in several public places in Germany. The first word monuments stood in the courtyard of the Kunsthaus Tacheles until eviction in 2013. The Kulturbrauerei in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg is still exhibiting the sculpture "LIEBE" (Love) and Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig is currently exhibiting the word "FREIHEIT" (Freedom) in their permanent exhibition.[8] From 2015 till 2016, the German Historical Museum in Berlin in collaboration with the Centre for Contemporary History, exhibited the word "EINHEIT" (Unity) in remembrance of the German reunification.[9]
