Lee Dong-hyuck (Hangul: 이동혁; born June 6, 2000), better known by his stage name Haechan (Hangul: 해찬), is a South Korean singer and dancer under SM Entertainment. He is a member of the boy group NCT and its sub-units NCT 127, NCT Dream and NCT U.[1] Haechan debuted on July 7, 2016 in the Seoul-based unit NCT 127. He then became a member of the fixed unit NCT Dream on August 24, 2016. In 2019, he also joined the rotational unit NCT U.
Early life[edit]
Haechan was born on June 6, 2000 in Seoul, South Korea, where he lived until he was 7 years old. He then moved to Jeju, South Korea for about 5 years before moving back to Seoul, where he attended the School of Performing Arts Seoul. He is the oldest of four siblings.[2]
Career[edit]
2013–2016: Pre-debut and SM Rookies[edit]
In 2013, Haechan joined SM Entertainment after passing the SM Saturday Open Auditions. He sang "Baby" by Justin Bieber, "Hello" by Huh Gak and "Ugly Duckling" by Son Seung Yeon and danced to "Sherlock" by Shinee.[3]
On July 17, 2014 he was introduced as a member of SM Rookies, a pre-debut training team under SM Entertainment.[4] That same year, Haechan, alongside other SM Rookies members, appeared on Exo 90:2014, a reality TV Show starring Exo where they recreated music videos and performed popular K-pop songs from the 1990s and early 2000s. On the program he sang the remake version of "I'm Your Girl" by S.E.S..[5][6] From 2014 to 2015, he participated in the SM Town Live World Tour IV as an SM Rookies member.[7][8]
In 2015, Haechan starred on the Korean revival of The Mickey Mouse Club as a Mouseketeer. The program included musical performances, games and skits, just like the original. The show aired on Disney Channel Korea from July 23 to December 17, 2015 and was hosted by Leeteuk of Super Junior.[9]
In 2016, Haechan starred in the first season of NCT Life while he was still an SM Rookies member.[10] Haechan also recorded the demo for "The 7th Sense" by NCT U, NCT's overall debut song, but he didn't end up appearing in the final track.[11]
2016–present: NCT[edit]
On July 2, 2016 Haechan was confirmed as a member of the second NCT unit, NCT 127.[12] On July 7, 2016 he debuted with the single "Firetruck" and had his first performance on M Countdown, performing the song along with the b-side "Once Again".[12] Their debut EP NCT #127 was released digitally on July 10, 2016 and physically on July 11, 2016.[13][14]
On August 19, 2016 Haechan was announced as a member of the third NCT sub-unit, NCT Dream.[15] On August 25, 2016 the group debuted with the single "Chewing Gum", which was performed for the first time on M Countdown that same day.[16]
On August 11, 2018, before officially debuting with NCT U, Haechan made a special participation on the sub-unit with the special stage "I Wanna Be a Celeb".[17] That same year, Haechan was featured on the October issue of the magazine Arena Homme + alongside Winwin and Chenle.[18] He also hosted the Busan One Festival, the Incheon Airport Sky Festival and the Jeju Hallyu Festival.[19][20][21]
On December 19, 2018 it was announced that Haechan had fractured his shin bone while shooting a VCR for NCT 127's first tour, "NEO CITY: SEOUL — The Origin", and would be taking a hiatus from the group.[22] Despite still recovering from the injury, Haechan participated in "NEO CITY: SEOUL — The Origin" on January 26-27, 2019.[23][24] On March 29, 2019 he officially came back from his hiatus in "NEO CITY: JAPAN — The Origin" in Saitama.[25]
On December 13, 2019 Haechan joined the sub-unit NCT U, who came back with the single "Coming Home".[26] The song was released as part of a special season of the SM Station project, "SM Station X 4LOVEs for Winter".[27]
In 2020, Haechan was featured on the June issue of the magazine STAR1 alongside Jungwoo and Mark.[28][29]
On August 5, 2021 it was announced through producer Ryan S. Jhun's personal Instagram that Haechan and fellow member Doyoung would participate on the first single from his first album.[30] The song, "Maniac", was released on August 12 along with its music video, starring dancer and choreographer Lia Kim.[31] In November, he appeared as a contestant on SBS's gaming show LoL The Next.[32] At NCT 127's second tour, "NEO CITY – The Link", Haechan and fellow member Taeil revealed for the first time an unreleased R&B track titled "Love Sign" composed by Haechan, Taeil and producer Deez .[33] Later that year, Haechan participated in the remake of the 2006 SM Town's song "Snow Dream", which appeared in the album 2021 Winter SM Town: SMCU Express.[34]
Influences[edit]
Haechan has mentioned many times Michael Jackson and Taemin of Shinee as major influences for him.[18][35][36] He decided that he wanted to become a K-pop idol after watching Shinee's "Replay" music video.[37][2]
