Park Ji-hyo (born February 1, 1997), professionally known by the mononym Jihyo, is a South Korean singer and a member of the K-pop girl group Twice, under JYP Entertainment formed by the reality show Sixteen. The leader and main vocalist of the group, she is known for her strong voice, dance skills, and charisma.[1]

Early life[edit]

Park was born on February 1, 1997 in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.[2] Her birth name is Park Ji-soo.[3]

Career[edit]

Pre-debut[edit]

When Park was a third grader, she participated in a contest on Junior Naver for a child role. After she won second place, she was scouted by JYP Entertainment. She joined the company at the age of eight or nine,[3][4] and spent ten years as a trainee before debuting with Twice in 2015.[1][3]

During her trainee years, Park was known as the face of Innisfree's teen line "TN" with boy band Boyfriend. She trained with many JYP idols including Sunmi, Bae Suzy, Jo Kwon, and Nichkhun.[3]

Park was set to debut in a girl group along with Nayeon, Jeongyeon and Sana, but the project was cancelled. Instead, they all joined the television music survival show Sixteen.[3] She legally changed her name to Park Ji-hyo before the competition.[3]

Debut with Twice[edit]

On October 20, 2015, Twice officially debuted with the release of their first mini-album, The Story Begins and the title song "Like Ooh-Ahh". Their debut showcase was held on the same day.[5] Although not the oldest member of the group, she was voted by her bandmates as their leader.[3]

Other activities[edit]

Jihyo has also starred in several music videos including Miss A "Only You".[citation needed] She is also credited for writing the lyrics of "Girls Like Us" on Fancy You.[6] The album and its six song (including the one that Jihyo wrote) topped the music charts in Japan.[7][unreliable source]

Personal life[edit]

On August 5, 2019, the agencies of Park Ji-hyo and Kang Daniel, a former member of Wanna One, confirmed that they had been dating since the beginning of the year. After the news broke, Park and Kang topped Twitter's trends list in the Philippines.[10][11] They were described as a new "power couple" of K-pop by the media.[12][13]
