Biography[edit]

Hafez Abdullah Othman Omar Derbas, Qadi Al-Qaisi[2][3] [4][5]was born in Baghdad, the district of Bab Al-Sheikh. His a family descended from the Al-Karawiya Iraqi clan, which resides in the suburbs of Jalawla[6] [7].

He is self-made, and one of Iraq's prominent figures in the economy. He has the mind of an economic thinker who was able to attract foreign agencies and investments. Hafez al-Qadi Square in Baghdad is attributed to him, which locate on the Rusafa side near the Al-Ahrar Bridge.

Hafez al-Qadi was a great Baghdad merchant who died in 1968, and at that time, his house was turned into a specialized shop in antiques and rare carpets under the name: (Diwan House). The shop was supervised by three young men who had a hobby of searching for rare stuff and antiques, including a carpet made for Queen Victoria, who died in 1901. And was found in one of the old stores in Baghdad[8].

His relation with politicians[edit]

Hafez Al-Qadi was close to the decision-makers during the monarchy 1921-1958, he was known for his generosity, and nobility like any authentic Baghdadi. He was from a middle-class family and grow up dependent on himself in creating his wealth.

The late Talib Mushtaq described him in his memoirs and said that he was from (Al-Ajaweed) to the people of his locality, Bab Al-Sheikh. His shops were located at the beginning of Al-Ahrar Bridge - from the entrance to Rasheed Street, which later turned into a shoe store [9].

Career[edit]

Hafez Al-Qadi was the first Iraqi to obtain an agency for the distribution of radio sets (radio) in Baghdad, and he also obtained the well-known American Ford car dealership,

Among the friends of Hafez Al-Qadi were many Iraqi politicians, including Sadiq al-Bassam and Abdul Razzaq al-Sheikhli.

The house of Hafez al-Qadi was an art collection of paintings by prominent Iraqi artists, as well as some international paintings, silver and crystal glassware, dishes decorated with pictures of Iraqi kings, pocket watches, and a piano made in the United States of America, and a collection of swords, daggers, guns, and silver bracelets.

His house contains the large swimming pool built at the end of the garden of the house, in which invitations and parties were often held for the upper class in the royal era. He was the first to try cinematic production in Baghdad in 1938. Al-Alam Al-Arabi newspaper published that Mr. Mustafa Al-Qadi, the brother of Hafez, had traveled by plane To England for bringing cinematic equipment and supplies in preparation for the production of a movie, but this did not happen[10].

Death[edit]

Hafez Al-Qadi lived for a long period and found himself ill and alone in Beirut, and when the disease became severe, he was asked to be returned to Baghdad to die there. He died in 1968, and his wealth was devoted to his brother Mustafa, who lives in London, then inherited the wealth of Hafez and Mustafa after his death, a relative of them, called Khaled Al-Qadi[11].
