Hani Rahib هاني الراهب

(1939-2000) a Syrian novelist from Latakia.

Life and Death[edit]

Hani Mohammed Rahib was born in 1939 in Mashkita village in Latakia governorate, as he lived his childhood years moving between city and countryside. He was affected by the death of his brother who was taking care of the entire family, so his second brother took care of the family until Hani obtained a second degree in high school. Moreover, He was given a free seat at the University of Damascus, Department of English Language[1] as he was granted a monthly salary of £S 180.

At the end of 1957, Hani Rahib lived with two of his friends in one room (Shaalan neighborhood), next his brother Hilal Rahib invited him to live with him.

Hani Rahib graduated from the Faculty of Arts and was appointed as a teaching assistant in the Department of English[2]. After that, United Nations gave him a seat at the American University of Beirut, and within a year, he obtained a master’s degree in English Literature, as for London he obtained a doctorate within two and half years. Dur to the many circumstances that Rahib faced, he traveled to the State of Kuwait in the Arabian Gulf. Hani was afflicted with cancer after removing it from his body. For a whole year, the doctor’s confirmed after every periodic examination that his body became free from disease, also he only have to avoid cold, nervous tension, and psychological anxiety. When he finished his stay in Kuwait and returned to his home in Damascus, as he was assured that he will enjoy his full health and that he saved enough money for himself and his family to secure a stable and dignified life that would secure for him the appropriate atmosphere for both writing and authorship. Soon, he published his last two novels (Green as the Seas) and (In the Sand I Draw a Line), as it wasn’t long before he discovered that cancer had not left his body and clung to it as it spread to all parts of his body. He died in Damascus on February 6, 2000.[3][4] Hani practiced writing novels and literary criticism, as he has eight novels and three short story collections and were published shortly after his death.

Hani Rahib the Renewed Novelist[edit]

Hani Rahib is considered a renewed model novelist, who worked on developing the Syrian novel through his diligent research for novelistic expression, novelistic technique and language economy. As well as the linguistic tension for him derives from a unified conception of language. Rahib once said: (As long as the novel is an almost recent phenomenon in our literary heritage, it should contain a new linguistic and stylistic structure). Moreover, his writings had a distinctive impact on the Arabic novel in both form and content and formed a milestone in the course and development of the contemporary Arab novel.

The Vanquished[edit]

Dar Al-Adab reported about an Arabic novel competition year 1960. In which more than one hundred fifty writers in the Arabic language participated. However, Hani Rahib was a student at Damascus University although he was no more than twenty-two years old but the surprise was that his novel “The vanquished” won the first prize.[5]

A Thousand and Two Nights Novel[edit]

The writer of (A thousand and Two Nights)[6] tried to tell the story of thirty people and each one of them thinks on his own until the defeat of June hit him. However, he discovered that he is a small part of defeated society and this defeat is a thousand years old. The noel represented the form of this society and the time in it is contiguous or simultaneous and about it Rahib mentioned: (I felt confident enough to present the wreckage of a novel, as I owe A Thousand and Two nights which tells a thousand tales).

The Two Novels: (( The Green Swamp)) and (( Green Like Fields))[edit]

Hani Rahib wrote both (The Green Swamp) and (Green Like Fields) novels, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Arab progress and Arab regional system. However, this feeling was reflected in his artistic tools and writing style. He worked with a group of small novels entitled (All the Women of the City) and when (Green Like Fields) was published, some thought it was a stand-alone novel as they were surprised to put it in this state.

The Hills Novel[edit]

(The Hills) novel was published in Beirut year 1989. However, he did not use the interlocutor, but instead he replaced it with semantics. The novel deals with two seemingly contradictory worlds, the world of myth, dreams, desires and obsessions of the suffering and barrenness of society, as it was described by the novelist Hassan Hamid. On the other hand, there is the world of history that is completely realistic and known. It has several overlapping timing, such as the historical time referred to directly in the novel (The First and Second World Wars, and year 1946). As well as the psychological time that appears evident in many of the characters of the novel. Next, there is the legendary time and Rahib called it the time of no time, which is represented by Al Daraweesh. Moreover, it is a novel that talks about the Arabs and about their experience of progress in the contemporary history of the Arab Union.[7]

His Writings[edit]

Rahib does not consider himself a short story writer, and mentioned that if he has some stories, which are four or five, then it is by chance. He also considers himself a seller and prefers to call it a story as he always expresses his dissatisfaction with this subject. Not to forget, that he was also writing the story as a kind of a warrior’s break between one novel and another. (While living my life, I pick up from what I can express in literary terms and it does not occur to me to do so through short stories, but through novels). During his life Rahib wrote three collections of short stories (The Virtuous City), (The Crimes of Don Quixote) and (Green as Pen), as the last one was published shortly after his death by the Literary Treasures House, which will reprint all his creative works, translations and various studies. Most of stories from the last collection were written between the early eighties and nineties. The stories were characterized by a specific plot and a distinctive language through which he was able to enter the depths of characters and elicit their ambiguities. Moreover, the loss of their chances in life without moving away from the national and social concerns of those characters. However, Rahib was a brilliant storyteller and profound in meaning.

Novel's Location[edit]

In general, Hani novel’s places is problematic. Some are specific and some are vague. However, we find in his first three novels that the place is Damascus, and in (The Epidemic) novel was in Latakia. As well as in one country and the place looks like Arab neighborhood. (The Hills) is a city that might be in Damascus, Cairo or Baghdad…

His Position on the Noble Prize[edit]

Rahib was asked one day about his flirtation with the Noble Prize so he replied: (As for the noble Prize, I am not a candidate for it and what I have written so far was eight novels only two of them are worth of reading and the other six are okay. I also have two collections of stories and this prize if we exclude the financial aspect from it, which is perhaps the only positive thing about it. A very notorious prize due to the interference of politics in it away from cultural considerations and in particular it’s promotion of imperial and capitalist values that do not suit me as an Arab who is proud of my heritage and civilization). The novelist Rahib and his translations as well as his interest in Zionist literature and studying it in great depth were the preoccupation of his thought, literature and life.
