Harshavardhan Rane (born 16 December 1983) is an Indian film actor known for his works in Telugu cinema. He is best known for Thakita Thakita (2010), Prema Ishq Kaadhal (2013) and Anaamika (2014).[2][3] In 2016, he made his Bollywood debut with Sanam Teri Kasam which received mixed reviews.[4]

Early life[edit]

Harshavardhan was born in Rajahmundry (Andhra Pradesh) and brought up in Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh). His father, Vivek Rane, was a doctor, his mother is a homemaker settled in Hyderabad, and his grandfather an army lieutenant. His sister, Rohini lives in Mumbai.

Career[edit]

Harsha joined the Bhagat Singh College in Delhi to pursue a course, but later dropped out. He trained at Barry John Acting Studio and started performing in theatrical ventures, including Indian adaptation of Tennessee Williams' works and some Hyderabad-based theater groups.[5] Later on, he worked as a freelancer in a film-branding enterprise. He wanted to be in the movies. He then moved on to Mumbai, where he got his first opportunity in the TV series Left Right Left on SAB TV in 2008.

He made his feature film acting debut with the Telugu language Thakita Thakita in 2010. Then he appeared in Naa Istam and Avunu. Over the following years, he acted in several Telugu films,[6] including the psychological thriller Maaya and comedy movie Brother of Bommali. He also made cameo appearances in films like Fidaa and Bengal tiger. Previously he was slated to make his Bollywood debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013), but opted out as it required an eleven-month contract. The romance film, Sanam Teri Kasam became his Bollywood debut.[7][8][9] It was written and directed by Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao and was released by Eros International on 5 February 2016. His next release was Paltan and his upcoming project is the Telugu film Brundavanamidi Andaridi. He is set to appear in three films directed by J P Dutta.[10]

He was among Times' Most Desirable Men in 2015, 2016 and 2017.[11][12][13]

He owns a charity foundation holding garage sales for the ShirtOff Foundation to raise money to support the education of a girl-child (Swati) who had lost her parents to HIV. The campaign has him selling T-shirts he wore in his films at charity garage sales. And the actor had recently sold his shirts in Hyderabad from his latest hit Sanam Teri Kasam and managed to single-handedly raise close to Rs Two lakhs and still counting through online sales. Talking about this unique initiative, " My fans buy my shirts on sale and pose with me holding placards that read Took my #ShirtOff۪ while some choose to simply contribute." Harshvardhan also says that he is humbled by the support his fans have shown him over the years. Every contribution no matter how big or small, go a long way in helping Swati, he says.[17][18]
