Haunted Montreal
Haunted Montreal is a theatrical ghost tour company based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The company offers ghost walks, paranormal investigations, and haunted pub crawls that explore the city's historical hauntings and ghost stories.
History
Haunted Montreal was founded in 2011 by Donovan King, a professional actor, historian, and tour guide.[1] King previously worked at the London Dungeon in England before returning to Montreal to establish the company.[2] In a 2017 interview, King stated that the company had documented approximately 150 ghost stories in Montreal.[2]
Tours and Services
The company operates several themed tours throughout Montreal, all conducted by professional actors and storytellers:
Ghost Walks
- Haunted Old Montreal - A walking tour through Old Montreal's historic and reportedly haunted locations
- Haunted Griffintown - A tour focusing on the Griffintown neighborhood, featuring the legend of Mary Gallagher
- Haunted Mountain (Mount Royal) - A tour exploring paranormal stories associated with Mount Royal
- Haunted Downtown Montreal - A walking tour of downtown Montreal's haunted sites
Additional Experiences
- Haunted Pub Crawl - A tour visiting three haunted pubs in the city[2]
- Paranormal Investigations - Interactive ghost hunting experiences led by professional ghost hunter Dominique Desormeaux[3]
The company also offers private tours and virtual tours.[2]
Media and Publications
Haunted Montreal publishes the Haunted Montreal Blog on the 13th of every month, featuring researched ghost stories and historical information about haunted locations in Montreal.[3]
In 2022, the company launched a bilingual YouTube channel devoted to Montreal's supernatural history. Hosted by Holly Rhiannon and Dr. Mab, the channel features deep dives into strange happenings reported at popular Montreal sites including Villa Maria, the McLennan Library, and Point Saint Charles.[3][4] The YouTube channel releases videos every second Saturday in both English and French.[3]
Approach
The tours combine theatrical performance with historical education. King, who holds degrees in theatre, education, and history from Concordia University, McGill University, and the University of Calgary,[5] emphasizes revealing lesser-known aspects of Montreal's history. The company acknowledges that it operates on the unceded Indigenous territory of Tiohtià:ke (Montreal).[5]
In a 2016 interview with CBC News, King stated: "For the totality of these reasons of history, I think that's probably why Montreal is the most haunted city in Canada, if not all of North America."[6]
Reception
The tours have received positive reviews on travel websites, with reviewers praising the guides' storytelling abilities and historical knowledge.[7] Media coverage has appeared in outlets including CBC Radio, CJAD, the Montreal Gazette, and Daily Hive.[3][4]
